Because doctors don't know exactly what causes primary brain tumors, it's difficult to pinpoint risk factors. In rare cases, brain tumors strike several members of a family, suggesting heredity may be a risk factor. But this accounts for only a fraction of cases.

Some types of brain tumors appear to occur more frequently in people who are exposed to radiation or certain chemicals, such as those who work in oil refining, rubber manufacturing, and chemical and nuclear industries. But a definite link between exposure to chemicals and brain tumors hasn't been proved. Similarly, electromagnetic fields and the use of cell phones have been studied as causes of primary brain tumors, but no definitive evidence indicates that either causes brain tumors.

Although brain tumors can occur at any age, they're most common in people older than 65. In children, those younger than 8 appear to be at a higher risk of brain tumors than are older children.

Overall, males and whites are more likely to develop a brain tumor.

Doctors and researchers don't believe that head injuries increase the risk of developing a brain tumor.

Scientists have linked several factors with an increased risk of developing a primary brain tumor. Nevertheless, most people who have these risk factors do not develop brain tumors, and many of those who do get brain tumors have none of the risk factors. These factors include the following:
Males are more likely to get brain tumors than females. Meningiomas, however, are more common in females.

White people tend to get more brain tumors than do people of other races.

Having a family member with a glioma may mean you are slightly more likely to develop the disease.

If you've been exposed to radiation–working in the nuclear industry, for example–you may have an increased risk of developing a brain tumor. Also, people who have received radiation therapy to the head may have an increased risk of developing meningiomas later in life.

Pathologists and embalmers who work with formaldehyde have a greater risk of developing brain cancer. But scientists have not found a link with other workers who are exposed to formaldehyde. Workers who make plastics may be exposed to vinyl chloride, which may increase the risk of brain tumors. And textile and plastic workers may be exposed to acrylonitrile, which could also increase the chance of brain cancer.

Scientists are researching whether cellphone use is a risk factor, but so far studies have not found convincing evidence of an increased risk of brain tumors among cellphone users. Researchers are also investigating if head injuries are a risk factor; so far, studies have not shown an increased incidence of brain tumors among people who have had head injuries

The cause of primary brain tumors is unknown, but people who work with rubber and certain chemicals have a greater-than-average risk of developing them. There is no evidence that head injury causes brain tumors, but researchers are trying to determine the relationship, if any, between brain tumors and viruses, family history, and long-term exposure to electromagnetic fields.

Symptoms do not usually appear until the tumor grows large enough to displace, damage, or destroy delicate brain tissue. When that happens, the patient may experience:

* headaches that become increasingly painful and are most painful when lying down
* nausea and vomiting or sudden attacks of vomiting not accompanied by nausea
* seizures
* dizziness, loss of coordination or balance
* personality changes
* sudden loss of vision
* memory loss
* speech problems
* sensory changes
* mental impairment
* weakness or paralysis on one side of the body

A doctor should be notified whenever a patient experiences one or more of the symptoms.-

The same things that cause tumours in other parts of the body, they are called carcinogens.
The term carcinogen refers to any substance, radionuclide or radiation which is an agent directly involved in the promotion of cancer or in the facilitation of its propagation. This may be due to genomic instability or to the disruption of cellular metabolic processes. Several radioactive substances are considered carcinogens, but their carcinogenic activity is attributed to the radiation, for example gamma rays or alpha particles, which they emit. Common examples of carcinogens are inhaled asbestos and tobacco smoke.
