Like traditional tattooing, the results are dependent upon the skills of the artist.
I have seen beautiful fine needle looking filigree work and I have seen heavy mish-mosh random scarring that you barely can tell what was being designed.
Most of us in the industry don't do this so you have to look really hard and be sure to see a lot of photos. You don't want someone just "trying it out."
You have to be committed to something like this, too. It is not as easy to have done as traditional tattooing is.

Scarification is not as bad as people seem to think. For my birthday, I had wings cut into my back. I love them. I plan on adding more detail to them. The pain was just slightly worse than a tattoo. I like the process more than tattooing. It's more natural than tattooing. The risk of infection is not big at all if you have it done professionally and take care of it properly. The thing with scarification a lot of people don't realize is that it takes a long time to heal. And because the scar is the body's natural way of healing, the results aren't always perfect. But I love it. I included a link to my place's myspace. The blog "wing scars" is me.

i love body modification.
But scarification, i have a few things against...
Im against the fact that people are hurting themselves like that, when i do know a few of them are using that as an alternative to cutting. Im also upset just because personally i have scars that i would do so much to get rid of, and i cant see why people are doing so much to get scars.
but some are really nice, i just got done looking on some of them on bmezine and a few, i couldnt care less for. But some are so beautiful and gorgeous.
The pain though, it has to be killer. And infection risks, ive also heard a lot of stories about people saying the most pain was the shower the next day.

I have had scarification done and also have done it to others in a professional setting. Try to get your hands on the documentary 'Modify'. www.bmezine.com

I do not have any but I know somebody that does.
It isn't something that I would personally do, but I find it another great expression of body art. I have a great respect for anybody that is willing to express themselves in their own way.

They are one mod I just can't wrap my head around.
For the most part, I don't think the end results are attractive.
I think it can look good though.
