I have an 80lb beautiful black GSD. Anyway, my dog got up on the counter and ate a whole package of Oreo cookies to include the wrapper. Well anyway, he was so sick. I have never seen a dog have diarrhea like that. I think he learned his lesson, he doesn't jump up on the counter and can't stand the smell of chocolate. I was very lucky that nothing more serious happened to him.

Growing up, before we heard that chocolate was dangerous for dogs, my mother would give our GSD a chocolate chip cookie every day. He loved it and lived for a very long time.

Here is a great site that will explain:

The overall idea is to not give dogs any chocolate and not let them near it. I did once have a poodle who got into some halloween candy when I was young but we caught her right away, and she didn't have nearly enough to become sick. (thank God), but always keep dogs away from chocolate, that is key. It is like little kids and vitamins... kids can take a lot of vitamins and not get hurt but if they take a whole bottle there is often enough iron in it to kill them.

Chocolate is not a good treat for dogs, as it contains a substance that can poison them. Also, grapes (probably the seeds in the grapes) can poison dogs, so avoid giving them those, too!

However, they do enjoy peanut butter!

If consumed in sufficient quantities, chocolate can be toxic to dogs! At the very least, it will lead to stomach upsets. And, at the very worst, the dogs could die. Why would you want to risk making your pets ill?
