I am going to second the Dog Whisperer suggestion. He talks all about your question every episode. First and foremost, he will suggest lots and lots of exercise (at least a 40 minute walk daily). Not only will this exercise be a bonding exercise itself, but will reaffirm your leadership role as long as you are walking the dog and he/she is not walking you. The exercise and leadership role have to be developed before the affection role in order to be successful. Cesar Milan always says, "exercise, discipline, and then affection." Take his pack leader quiz at http://www.cesarmillaninc.com/poll/index.php
You can see how you're doing and it will give you some helpful tips too.

To love you, just spend lots of time with him/her. Be sweet, but you also have to sometimes be a little strict to see that your dog respects you. It takes hard work, so don't expect your dog to love you and respect you in ten minutes. Glad I could help!

You have to take care of it and give it food and water and take it on walks outside and play with it inside it. If you do all of those things everyday your dog will love and respect you.

Watch the Dog Whisperer on the national Geographic channel. I am serious.
Chh. Chh. Lol
I have tried his methods with my 3 dogs and they work, but it's an ongoing thing. you can't stop or give up. it's like children. you have to care and be willing to put in 100 percent. Consistency with discipline and THEN affection will do the trick.

dogs, like kids, respect authority who gives clear instructions, guidance and corrections when they do not behave. Spoiled dogs or kids do not love their "parents".

Treat it kindly, and take it to obedience classes so you learn how to command it authoritatively. Love it.

Empathy is the secret.Try and think what they would want.If you give it to them they will like you.
If you only give it to them when you yourself want to and you think it would be good for them they will respect you.Like children really.
