Women tend to wear buttonholes - or corsages - on the left, because this dates from times when women had ladies' maids to assist them to dress. As most people are right-handed, the maid would pin the corsage on the left, so that she did not have to lean across the front of her employer.
Men have theirs on their right, because while they had valets to assist them to dress, the majority of gentlemen would adjust their own buttonhole, as this could often be a gift from a woman.
Modern day etiquette isn't as strict as to which side a woman should wear her corsage, and it is becoming more popular to wear it on a bag or attached to a wrist - that way a woman doesn't need to worry too much about spoiling the line of her outfit, or even if she has some fabric to attach it to, given the trend for bodices and halter necks at the moment.

Their left , but they don't have to wear it on their clothes, at my Sons wedding last year, his Mother-in-law had hers on her clutch bag.
