i have windows xp home edition and whenever i run the command prompt it starts off as C:\Documents and settings\my name>_ , how can i just enter C\..., as i cannot delete the documents and settings part?

just press cd\

Typing "cd .." without the quotes will take you up one directory level.

btw, you can't delete your Documents and Settings folder.

have you tried this?

C:\Documents and Settings\your name>CD..

then press ENTER

repeat the cd.. thing until you close all the directory or until you get to C:\

The response from mubaris h is the quickest way to do it.

Simply type "cd\" (without the speech marks) and press Enter.

Do this repeatedly until you get to the C:\ prompt.

Do it two more times. and you will be at the root directory.
