I frequent various coffee shops in my area and will use their hot spots to do remote work. I always buy a cup of coffee and sit down, but how long is too long to take up a seat? I don't want to seem like I am loitering!

Maybe 2 hours? You can always buy a little pastry later if you're trying to feel guilt free.. Or just a large coffee! Don't worry about it, if you're not a bum then they probably won't care. If it's a big chain like Starbucks, it shouldn't matter. A small independent store- stay for an hour or pitch in for a pastry.

Buying one cup of coffee and sitting there more than an hour is pushing it. These are places of business and not charities. They offer free internet access as a service to their customers, but they need customer turnover to make any money.

If you are there more than an hour buy something else or go to a library or something.
