Are you aware that the system might not be compatible with UK games or even the UK television? In fact, the reason why it won't work is because corporations don't want you to be able to buy stuff from other countries (to save money).
Consoles and games have a region code (each country has their own region). American games will only play on American Playstation 3's. UK games will only play on UK systems, etc. It sounds unfair, but think if Brits could buy their DVDs from China for $2 each (DVDs have region codes too).
The UK and the US also have different television formats (PAL and NTSC, respectively). The two are incompatible because they have different frame-rates and resolutions.

if you are going to spend that much money on a playstation 3 then buy it where ever your children are because playstation 3 DO NOT WORK ABROAD the blu-ray disk is like the dvd they have codes and the PAL's do not work anywhere else except in europe plus you will need to buy and transmitter to change the current since every country has different voltage. Now getting to your playstation 2 games they will only work in the europe since they are PAL so if ur children are in america just buy the ps3 in america it will be easier.

If you buy from a country that uses a different voltage from us in the uk your will need to buy a voltage convertor if you do your software updates the magority of ps2 games are compatible on the 60gb ps3 but if you get the 80gb the games are only about80% compatible and remember that you will have to pay vat on the price you buy the playstation for and shipping also(it is actually easier just buying one in the uk ) Their should be a cut in price quite soon. Remember ps3 games are reigon free but the dvd's and bluray disks arn't so you won't be able to play films bought in the uk

I'm unsure if Europe has a seperate game system (like PAL for BIOs) but I'm about 90% sure you can play the games you buy at a store in the UK on your PS3 (from America/Canada anyways).
If your children have burnt/downloaded games, they won't run on the PS3 since the PS3 isn't mod-able/chip-able yet as far as I know. So if you have regular store bought PS2/PS1 games you should be fine, if you DL'd em onto a dvd/cd they won't work without a mod chip which isn't available.
Have a browse on the net and see if PS3's have different BIO's or anything, as far as I know we use different plugs cuz of a different voltage coming out of the walls. Or you could ask sony or a trusted gaming supplier/merchant.

PS2 games (and PS1 too) are region-locked. I.e. UK/European games will only work on a UK/Euro console. And US on a US...
As far as i'm aware there is no way to 'chip' your console to allow this, and the firmware updates the PS3 downloads periodically from the net would probably render them useless anyway.
Sorry, but your best bet is probably to buy a UK PS3. In the long run, it will probably be less hassle.
You may want to hang for a short while, though, to see if there are any decent xmas bundles on the way.
(Note; PS3 games are region free, so far.)

Most ps2 games from Uk will run on other regions Playstation 3s. The main reason some wont is that the software was not compliant - 99% of ps2 games are ps3 compliant. If you buy from overseas the warranty may be invalid or could cost a lot in postage if it breaks, not to mention if you need to contact them. You will need to pay import fees if you organise it yourself, if you buy from ebay get a HK version (the instructions are english)
