Depends on the country. Mexico is highly competitive for General Surgery, Gynechology & Obstetrics and even Pediatrics is still highly competitive; whereas the competition isn't that big in Sports medicine & rehabilitation, Genetics, Epidemiology, Bioethics and for unusual reasons Geriatrics.
Nobody in Mexico wants to specialize in Radioonchology for some strange reason even though it's a high paying job.
Even though Genetics isn't a very popular field, that doesn't mean entering Residency is easy. There's only 25 slots open each year for almost 1000 people applying.
G-O has about 1000-2000 slots for 10,000 people.
The catch? Getting into Residency in Mexico is TOUGH.

Cadiothoracic surgery is the most and Geriatrics the least competetive.
