My allergiest doctor has recomended allergey shots that start with 2 a week for several months, then 1 a week then once a month or so for about 4 to 5 years. My allergies are for cats, and dust mites primeraly. The effect of these shots does not start for at least 6 months or so. Has anyone had this form of treatment and how effective was or is it.

Robert: Immunotherapy does not work for a large portion of the population. It has been proved effective for people with seasonal allergies (like hay fever) but not so effective on things like dust mites. If you don't see a difference in 9 to 12 months, then I would discontinue. Also, the routine shouldn't last 5 years. If you aren't any better in 2 years, it is not going to work. Here is a great article back from 1997 about a study at John Hopkins that addressed the issue directly http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=health&res=950DE7DC173DF933A05752C0A961958260

They didn't help me much at all. Some people they help and some people they don't. I took them for a couple of years. I always got a lot of swelling where I got the shot. The first time I got the shot I got anaphylaxis and they had to give me epinephrine. After that they had to dilute it even more and it took a long time for them to increase the dosage. My primary allergies are to cats and grass, but I have a lot of other allergies too. Eventually I got tired of the shots and since they didn't seem to be helping I stopped getting them. Flonase nasal spray for my allergies and Advair for my asthma have helped me more than allergy shots. Nothing helps me with the cat allergy, though.

I had allergy shots, but I had three a week for five years, then three twice a month for a couple of years, and finally three once per month for a couple more years. They helped me a lot. However, it was a couple of years before I could tell any difference and five years before I had complete relief from symptoms.

Yeah, I did it for 3 years...and it didn't do jack $hit. Total waste of time and money.
