I was told I would get 6 to 10 weeks of training on their computer system as it is all different for each company.

On day 3 they transfered 100 claims into my que as they belonged to a young man that was just recently fired.

Most of his claims are a mess and some are even in violation with the Dept of Insurance, (DOI).

I have not been able to check the claims totally as I do not know how to get into the claim totally in their system, I have not been trained.

I talked to my unit manager who said he talked to his boss and told them its like setting me up to fail and even my trainer said, it was so un realistic for them to think I can just dive in and handle these claims without knowing the system.

They also want to start me on getting new claims in a day or so.

I was totally overwhelmed and even called in sick, which I was having a bad allergy attack, but part of

Every time I have changed jobs and gone to another insurance company I've been thrown to the wolves. The company I'm working for now started giving me property claims before they ever sent me to property school. I'd never had any training on property and never worked property claims before.

The company before that - was moving into a new space but construction was behind - so I did not have a desk. I spent 2 months taking claims - had no computer - no desk- I sat on the floor with a telephone (didn't even have a recorder to take statements with!). (literally - on the floor with only a phone - no exaggeration there - and they transferred me about 75 -100 files to get started and put me on full rotation) I found an old file box so at least I had something to keep my files and ink pens in!

Hate to say it but in our business it's common to just get tossed out there and sink or swim.

When it happens to me, I ask co-workers for help - any co-worker that is available- and ask a lot of questions. They are usually great about helping - they want to you to succeed (so you don't quit and someone else has to be hired) Keep a notebook handy so you can take notes on the system and refer to it as you go and plan to be working past 5 a lot as you learn.

Sure, this is an opportunity to be set up for failure- but it's also an opportunity to really show them what you are made of!

Good Luck!

This kind of crap is standard operating procedure for many claim departments. It's really too bad that companies don't put more money and personnel in the one dept that has the most contact with their customers, but I digress.

My advice is to stand up for yourself and don't let them set you up for failure. Odds are the senior management doesn't care about you at all. You are replaceable to them and probably with somebody who they can get for less money. This is why I am self-employed in the claims business. Couldn't stand working for idiots who didn't care about the customer or employee.

100 files on day 3. Wow, that sucks. When I was a claims and subro manager I didn't give new adjusters (experienced or not) new files for at least 30 days. They needed time to learn the systems. I just had them train with other adjusters on new files. On the job training if you will. That worked pretty well and they were pretty much ready to go when they got their files on day 30.

Ask you direct manager for the training and assistance you need everyday...politely. You need to make them aware that you are willing to work hard but you need to the training and tools to have a fighting chance. Make that mgr take a vested interest in your success.

Get to know your co-workers and find out the shortcuts that they use in order to have a chance to keep up.

If you aren't getting the training you need then get out. As you know, being an adjuster can be one of the most stressful jobs on the planet. It's a gamble to go somewhere else, but at least you a chance to win at some place new. If things don't change where you are, you already know you have lost.

Good Luck.
