There are many openly gay men in Thailand, and it's generally not criticized, but it's not respected either. In media, the homosexuals get roles as comic relief, but hardly anything serious.
Thailand is 94% Buddhist; is there something in Buddhism that puts gays at a lower class?

Buddhists are advised to refrain from sexual misconduct which includes adultery, rape, bestiality, pedophilia, etc....
That doesn't necesarily include homosexuality. That's not to say they're completely for it, exactly, but its definitely not as big a deal as in Western religions.
Heterosexual and homosexual relationships alike are considered a positive thing for the most part if they promote the development of commitment and intimacy.
Premarital sex also isn't considered quite as big a deal, as Buddhists regard marriage as more of a civil ceremony than a religious one
Buddhist monks refrain from sexual contact altogether

(I think Rin is confusing Buddhism with Hinduism)

There is no sexuality in true Buddhism, so there are no gays, bisexuals or heterosexuals. Anyone who claims to be a gay Buddhist is a liar because they wouldn't then be following the teachings of true Buddhism.

Many Buddhists there believe that the gay/transgender person did something in a past life that led to their current situation. So, most people think they probably did something bad in a past life. Their sexuality is usually tolerated because it is the consequence of their past decisions. It is not respected because it arose from bad karma.
