To my knowledge, there are no modern-day ninjas.
The art of Ninjutsu is the art that Ninja's use. However, many believe that in order to be a ninja, one must be a great fighter. I believe that if a ninja ever gets into a fight, it will be because the ninja failed to keep his stealth, this failing to be a ninja all-together!
Ninjutsu or Taijutsu would be your best bet if you want to practice like a ninja!

Simple answer is you can't. Just like you cant be a samurai.
That doest mean that you cant practice some practical aspects of the art. It just means that the rest of it has no practical use today. Ninjutsu is a martial art just likeJujutsu or karate. I'm afraid most of what you think the art is about is based on TV and magazines which is a load of garbage. Taijutsu has matured but unfortunately people still seem to want to wear black masks and pajamas.
Oh well each to their own.

I suppose if you study the art of Ninjitsu, then you could consdier yourself a Ninja, though I'm not sure that anyone in Ninjitsu really calls themselves that.
You could ask Jeff McKissak of Club Nin in Dallas Texas. I'm sure he could enlighten you or point you to a Ninjitsu club in your area, if one exists. www.clubnin.com

You have to be trained by a proffesional in a field of whatever martial arts you plan on going into..the training never stops,mostly..it's a lifelong commitmentto be a true one,not something you see everyday. As some others have posted,the martial art of Ninjitsu is usually refered as the 'official ninja art',but it really depends on what kind of ninja you want to be. :)
