Some of the diamond mines in Africa go pretty deep.. and they need special equipment to keep the air clean and breathable...
I think that once you dig into molten lava the digging is over though.. and there will be a volcano in the place where your digging started.. LOL!

No one in there right mind would dig a hold to the center of the earth, even with machines. The center of the earth if you haven't heard; scholars is hot and will melt that stuff. Hotter than the sun shines on the earth. So the real question here is. Are you scientist going to spend all your time and life wasting away. Trying to make a machine that can handle it. Or save a few bucks in development. Go to the bar have a life

Don't know how long, but assuming Iowa and Florida have the same distance from the center of the earth (ie. you are not on top of a mountain in one state, and down in a canyon in another), then it should take you the same time!
Just think of two points on the surface of a ball.
