I would say the place where you're going to see people standing in pentagrams is most likely going to be in a movie or an episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
There certainly are people who do sit within circles or even magical diagrams and perform rituals, but these are probably people who also watch too many movies.
The thing is, old magic, Wicca, Gaia belief, New Age religions ... they are as valid a spiritual connection for some people as taking bread and wine in a church. Science is rapidly disproving all the claims of the bible and other establishind mainstream religions. People are realising how spiteful and hateful the established religions are and many people cannot come to terms with such hatred and bigotry. Yet there is still a need in many people to have a spiritual connection. Buddhism, paeganism, nature worship, all seem to fulfill that need in various people.
Personally, I do not feel the need to look to a higher individual being. Existence itself - the wonder of the universe from the microscopic to the universal scale is spiritual enough for me. What is, is and it's marvellous to just be a part of the universe.
But each to their own.

I don't know of a single magical practitioner who stands within a pentagram. It's mostly a Hollywood thing. magical practitioners often stand within circles, which have two main pruposes. In ceremonial magic, the circle is primarily protective. In Wicca, the circle is frequently containing, allowing energy to build up inside before being released all at once. It also separates the mundane world (outside) with the bridge between worlds (inside).

Chanting is used in many philosophies. It can be useful for meditation and relaxation.
Pentagrams? I suppose they are meant to symbolize something magical, spiritual, whatever, and are meant to focus your energies or thoughts.
