The word sport when said in plural is still sport.
There is no 's' on the end.
Like other plural words :
one sheep lots of sheep
one fish lots of fish
etc etc!

Who says there is no "s" at the end of sports? In America in our school systems we are taught the plural form of sport is indeed sports! Sport used as a adjective is used in the plural form with an "s"

Main Entry: sport
Variant(s): or sports
Function: adjective
: of, relating to, or suitable for sports; especially : styled in a manner suitable for casual or informal wear

Oh and when I used spell check on this entry no errors where found, so it sports with a "s" was wrong, don't you think that spell check would catch it!

Oh its also in the Websters Dictionary! You do have Websters in Australia, don't you!

I think the more important question is why your lot says "maths" instead of "math." To me, that is incorrect, because mathematics is not a plural for the singular "mathematic" which isn't even a word. Truncating the word to "math" is the logical way to go, adding the "s" is not. Once you figure that out for me, maybe I'll consider discussing why our pluralizing sport as "sports" might be considered incorrect.

I never would have thought that would bother someone so much, but OK here goes: If an American says "I like sports," they are generally saying they like all kinds of different sports, not just one. If they want to say they like a particular sport, they usually don't use the word sport, they say the name of the particular sport.

For the same reason that in some places "color" is spelled (or is it spelt?) "colour". It's the way it is.
