Ok, I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 Liter Club Cab truck. It has 81,000 miles on it. It is also an automatic. For the past 1,000 miles or so, I've been able to feel a pretty strong kick when the automatic transmission shifts, like the truck kinda jerked a little or something when it shifted, but it still accelerated normal and felt completely normal except for that little jerk I felt when it shifted.

Also, whenever I would shift from Drive to Reverse, the truck would kinda jerk in the same manner, except I would be sitting still with the brakes on, so it would kinda jerk forward a little bit. Whenever I would back up somewhere, and then put it in park, once I let off the brakes, I could feel the truck roll back a little bit and jerk then too.

Now the problem is, it seems my truck is not like shifting at all, or it barely is, but something is really wrong. When I accelerate, everything will be fine up to 30 mph, but then it feels like I can't go any faster and it won't shift...

The engine will just make a loud humming noise like it does right before it is supposed to shift, but it won't. And also, it will only be at like 2500 rpm, thats it. It will just stay at like exactly 30 mph, and if I hold down the pedal, it won't shift or go any faster, but as soon as I let off the pedal and push right back down, like kinda pump it, it will jerk and shift and then go all the way up to 55 mph, but then the same thing happens- it won't go any faster, the rpm's are like 2500, but this time, no matter what I do, I can't get it to go over 55mph. And this big problem just started happening tonight.

For one last detail, my truck used to be able to accelerate really fast, but now it is going super slow.

What could be wrong? What would it take to fix this problem?

The above described symptoms are those of a transmission that is in need of a fluid change. The valves are sticking and won't allow it to shift properly. Go to your local parts store and get some additive for sticky valves, preferably the kind you put in and run it a while, then change the fluid and filter and adjust the bands.
If that doesn't work, some major repair may be necessary.
People badmouth Dodge all the time for transmission problems, when it is really the faulty operator.

Dont listen to these people. Check this, look under the hood and on the side of the throttle body are some cables. To me it sounds like your kick down cable is off. They are known to fall off of these trucks and just snap right back on. If it is not off it may also be out of adjustment. It is also possible that your cat is clogged. When you get up to 30, are the rpms low or are they high?

Man, a trans only lasts so long--you need a new one--rebuilts are junk--go the extra few bucks for a good warranted replacement from a professional--usually a 3 year warranty. Youcan't help it--it served you well

make sure that you don't have a vaccuum leak in your transmission. if your transmission is computer controlled there will more than likely be a check engine light on, but i would research that, if i were you. the easiest thing to do would be check your tranny fluid level. it is about to the mileage of needing a tranny flush. if you do this, have a full tranny flush done. meaning circulating the fluid out, dropping the pan and replacing the filter

your transmission is in limp in, and its taking off in 3rd gear. car transmissions take off in 2nd, trucks take off in 3rd. it goes into limp in when it receives any sort of signal from the trans that makes the controller think that it could do internal damage to the trans. could be the governor pressure sensor or soenoid, or the output speed sensor, or the relay. the governor stuff is internal, the sensor is on the tailshaft. the speedo will work fine even because it gets a signal from the rear diff sensor. anyone with a scanner will be able to check these 3 things.

Your transmission is about to go out. Need to get in to a shop ASAP, a fluid flush might fix it, but it's probably past that by now

I had the same happen to my 2002 GMC van. Youre going to need a new trasmission. try to get an MRO off insurance. (ii think its an Mro) but it cant be helped, it happened to me
after it was flushed!

(this should cost 5,000$ if you pay yourself.)

Good Luck,
