because with crunches and squats you gain muscle - all they do is build muscle, they dont burn any fat. the only fat burning exercise is cardio - do it 4-6 times a week for average of 45min.
dont forget that we cant spot reduce body fat naturally - you will get rid of your problem areas by reducing body fat percentage.

There is the skin, the tissue underneath and the muscles. If you are burning fat and gain muscles, it doesn't change the skin and tissue underneath.
Be happy that you:
a. loose weight and b. get healthier
Don't believe that body sculpting baloney, you see in commercials.
As more you love the person, you see in the mirror, as better you feel and look, do some smart dressing with clothes.

99% of fitness is your diet. When I say diet I do not mean slimfast and the like. Diet is your lifelong healthful eating plan. So you need to evaluate what your eating verus what your expending. If this is already in balance, maybe you just have a slow metabilism. In which case more cardio!!
