Well! And it only took 27 minutes to come up!

Will someone please explain to me why this one was even controversial?

Hey, Tuna, they aren't MY statistics. I just thought they were interesting.

As a collective whole -- no. Certain individuals, absolutely.

The article only says 60% roughly say "very important" -- and most of that is based on the fact that until the past few decades, people were generally allowed to impose their religious viewpoints as a matter of community standards or state/federal law -- which reinforced that belief that one religion could and should be dominant.

If you look at the countries where the numbers are small -- either you have a very diverse population already -- or you have a situation where some other factor is predominant, often because the religion is non-controlling.

For example, in Japan, the largest religions are Shinto and Buddhism -- both of which are personal, and which specifically avoid any concept of being able to impose them on other people through force. And Europe, in addition to its diversity of culture, also had recent experience with how bad it is to impose things by force.

America hasn't learned that lesson yet -- neither the US, nor South America -- based on the statistics given.

ridiculous.
I'd no more say that than that Europeans are godless. In Europe there are many state sponsored religions...you'll find them in most of Nordic and Scandanavian countries as well as countries such as Monaco, Switzerland and others. They actually STILL have state sponsored religion and it's all Christian.

I think much of the statistics you cite are a backlash against that particular fact. There IS NO separation of church and state and many people are starting to protest that in their own ways. This is the result. That hardly makes the US zealots in comparison. We simply approach religion differently.

I won't say all, but most Americans who push their religious beliefs upon everyone and the courts, believe they are doing God's work. God on the other hand does God's work and doesn't need their help or interpretations of what they believe is what he believes. That would be like you telling me what I think, or how to feel.

I believe in the same premise that God put forth for us all. And that is FREE WILL. He gave it to each of us to Honor Him in our own ways, and not to follow the fanatics. So England is behind as far as filling the churches up. While souls are still filled without them. Isn't that a blessing in itself.

sigh truthfully we funded the Shah of Iran and the Soviets funded Saddam. in basic terms after the Iranian rebellion is whilst we help Saddam interior the war that exchange into already all started. truthfully it exchange into the Iraqi people who sentenced him and killed him. truthfully we funded the Taliban whilst it exchange right into a gaggle of mountain warriors battling against the Soviet profession. truthfully from what I truthfully have seen, people who can, flow to the U. S. or Europe because of the fact they LOVE the freedoms of the West. it particularly is the religious zealots and the governments that help them, that do not in basic terms like the West because of the fact they prefer to blame somebody for his or her failure to injury "the Zionist usurper state" because of the fact if it isn't the West then it particularly is their very very own incompetence and racism that keeps Israel in place.

I don't think they are. In fact I think that it is going the other way. Many Christian Americans (BTW the majority of Americans are Christian) are disgusted with the Christian Right and their bullying and hypocrisy and their whole damn attitude. And they are disgusted with religious radicals in general.
