how do you know the earth is round? what proof do you have? is this from experience or do you take someone elses testimony that it is round?

Is the proof you have based on someone elses experiences? why do you believe it is round, unless you sailed yourself?

it has been posted that "you cannot sail around the world", about 8 thumbs up, in agreement.

The Panama Canal was built to avoid the dreaded Cape Horn, every sailors nightmare and challenge.

there is path to sail the entire globe, Frances Drake did it. in the later 1500's.

Sigh - some days, it's just not worth talking to you all.

Sattelite photos, dear.

BTW, you cannot sail fully around the world, even now, and sailing would not convince you that the earth is round - you do NOT feel the curve of the earth.

Shut the f*ck up right now, k? It's called NASA. They send space shuttles into the sky and take pictures of the earth. And guess what! The pictures show that it's round! No f*cking way that's totally insane! Who would have though, a PICTURE? Also, how would sailing around it assure you that it's round? It could be more oval for that matter.
Basically what I'm trying to tell you is that I hate you because you're stupid.

I have indeed believed the testimony of others, seen the pictures of the world from outer space, trusted the views I have had of other planets through telescopes. The explanations that have been made are consistent with the evidence I have both seen and heard of.

I have also seen sailboats coming over the horizon, with the masts visible first, then as they approach, the entire boat becoming visible.

Why do you believe it's round, assuming, of course, that you do, especially since God in Job reports grabbing the world by its "edges."

maybe i dont have firsthand experience, but i do have viable physical evidence that suggests the earth is round. the glory of science is being able to make observations and making inferences or theories based on them. if a new observation suggests something different, you can adjust that inference without having to stubbornly accept the first one as truth.

if we didnt have reason, wed probably still believe the earth is flat, if thats what other people were telling us.

Eratosthenes proved the Earth's circumference of about 40,000 km in 240 BC.

It is reasonable (rational) to trust evidence produced by others when it the result of rigorously objective scientific method, and independently verified. This is how knowledge is created.

Seriously, you can measure the curvature of the earth without traveling around the world. Try it some time.

Mathematically, you can prove the world is round without having to sail it.

Well, Philosophically how can i say that you even exist to ask this question, and really its just an artificial intelligence network controlling me on a small flat spaceship in space, constantly erasing and implanting memories of "other places" but then again.. Dont be ******* stupid :P

Well for starters I have seen ships sail out. The last thing that disappears is the mast.

I've seen images of the Earth from space. I believe they are real because I am not a complete idiot.
