He doesn't want "things" he wants time with you!!
Make up some "tickets" and give them to him pleging time together. For example, what do you two share in common? A sporting event? Fine, pledge a "date" to go to a game......or to sit at home (without your cell phone) to watch the game....giving him your full attention.
Write something telling him about a special time you two shared.......if you have a picture, great!
Adults don't give a hoot about "things" they crave the knowledge their children understand just how hard it is being a parent. This is something children don't learn until they are in their 30-40's and by then the parent may be gone.
This presents are cheap, leaving you more $$ to continue coventing "things."

okay heres a few ideas
Does he have a favorite sports team? if so get him an official jersey of that team.
get your old man an IPOD, and a NAPSTER CARD, teach him how to download his favorite 80's songs , it will give you a chance to be close to him for awhile too.
buy him a Prepaid Visa card and let him have at it :)
take him to dinner and just visit with him and before the dinner is done, tell him you love him :)
make him a banana split and watch him eat it :)
well I wont keep you from readig other suggestions, I am glad that you care about your dad like that, that is gift enough but good luck in your quest :)

Easy! Hook him up with a limo ride and an all-pass for him and his buddies at your best Gentlemen's Club. Maybe even throw in a lap dance for the guy!
Of course, the tips are on his wallet.

Get him a pocket watch, maybe even a nice car would help, an old one like.... a .... Ford or something. Get him something antiqued? Maybe something he might remember from his childhood?
