Up through the Middle Ages, apparently God gave no one astromonical knowledge of the shape of Earth, so everyone believed it to be flat.

Shouldn't a deity give you all the facts before commanding you to use your "free will" in making choices in what to believe?

LDS MOM, where does the Bible say the Earth is round???

Beng: I guess we don't need any knowledge to decide whether to believe in ANY fairy tale, not just the flatness of the earth (this includes belief in unicorns and deities)

Most people in the middle ages couldn't read; they had no access to the Bible; it wasn't until Luther and Tyndale came a along and said that the Bible should be accessible to all people in a language they understood that things started happening. Most scholars and church people believed what Aristotle said about the earth. Once the Bible was put in the hands of the common people they learned what God said about the Earth which is why Galileo faced such opposition.

You have a lot of ??? on hear, let me give you something to ponder, wouldn't it be hard to have spring summer winter and fall without the earth being round, I mean something has to be turning right, the sun is round, the moon is round, think about it. My feeling is a lot of people knew the earth was round, but they didn't exactly have cnn and fox back then did they, and if you did come up with something different in those days they burned you at the stake or at least thought about it, men like Nostradamus or martin Luther had a tough go of it. just something to ponder, I mean didn't nostradamus come up with the cure for the black plague or something and they claimed he got it from the devil, and how about martin luther which is well ducumented how he broke away from the catholic church and they hunted him like a dog after a criminal. Just something to Ponder.... Now how about that free will, you have it here. Do you not???

A new automobile does not come with a pre-programmed steering wheel. One has to figure out when, where, and how to drive. We start out unable to talk or walk . God is playing the world's best parlor game. We have to figure out how to get the Gold Ring without falling in a hole. We are given an almost impossible burden of having "to love one another" in the process. There will only be a few winners ("few will find the Narrow Gate".) But there will be runner-up prizes for some...

The church held that the earth was flat, but that is not what the scriptures said.

ISA 40:22 It is He who sits above the CIRCLE of the earth

Hehheee one MAJOR reason that many did hold the earth to be flat was that to them it was. Hheheee when many people lived and died perhaps maybe 10 miles from the place of their birth, the world DIDN"T need to be round.

One should also note that the concept of 'free will' is actually a modern invention stemming from the time of the inquistions. When people would endure weeks/ years of torture, and still not bow to the christian definitional idols or sin 'confessions'---they were said to have 'free will'.

Did God give Pharoh 'free will'? Prior to moses asking to 'release his people', god came and 'hardened his heart'?

EXO 4:11 The LORD said to him, "Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD ? ((Does THIS sound like 'free will'?))

Deut 32:39 "See now that I myself am He! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand.

Isa 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in: NOTICE it says the circle of the earth. That is round! But many overlook that either by choice or by sheer stupidity. Many prefer to see the ideas of man rather than the truth of God. It is so egotistical to think that man knows more than the Creator of all.

You appear to be a grown man, and I'm sure you have heard of studying TO LEARN THE FACTS. All is there in his word, the Bible, so you educate yourself. When we go to kindergarten we learn as a kindergartener, 1st grade, etc., on up to high school. We do not learn trig in kindergarten; we learn that in middle or high school. Education is part of schooling and obtaining accurate knowledge as we grow [UP].

As a grown man you should know that we are not born knowing all but must acquire accurate knowledge as we grow. I am just appalled at the adults on this site who really pose lame question and answer after the same daily.

You of all people should know, as a GROWN ADULT MAN that you study and work at acquiring accurate knowledge. It does not just come to you on a whim. You must take time for your own PERSONAL STUDY???

End..

The kind of decisions that are spiritually important have to do with morality and how we treat people, about whether we are selfish or altruistic. To make such decisions the knowledge we need is knowledge of morality. We do not need to know any astronomy in order to decide whether we should tell the truth or tell lies, steal or give, be faithful or commit adultery.

I think He gave us all we needed, however, no deity ever has and no deity ever will. Facts are the cumulative outcome of bits of information and many facts are forever changing as new information is added. What is it that you're trying to discredit?

Easy..............."LIE"

You need to acquire some knowledge, and possibly some "Wisdom"!

Footnote -
When "Wisdom" dawns in man, man then understands that there is no such thing as "free will", for everything under the sun, has a certain value and eventually must be paid for, in full.

It is this action within man, called "free will" that causes a human to suffer continuously, not allowing "Peace" to fill ones life.
