It would be more polite to tell them. You never know, this person might be about to make a presentation of some kind. I would want to be told.

However, this should be done in a respectful manner. If you are alone, just calmly and matter of factly mention the food in the mouth and leave it at that. If you are surrounded by people, it would be ideal if you could whisper this to the person privately or somehow signal the person with out everyone taking notice. This way the person won't become humiliated in front of everyone. Many people may not even know that the person has food in their teeth - and there is no reason why they should.

The rule is that if they can fix it, tell them. So if someone has food in their teeth, then certainly you should discreetly tell them so they can fix it.

On the other hand, if a lady has a run in her stocking, don't mention it, since she won't be able to repair it, and she can at least hope that no one else noticed it.

Tell them as soon as you see it.
If you don't tell them, its like you don't respect them enough to help them out. Its a small thing, but its so weird how everyone gets uptight about food in teeth.

I would rather you tell me as soon as you see it rather than seeing it for myself at the end of the day and being embarrassed over how many people must have seen me

It's funnier to let them walk around with food in their teeth.

Your guideline is whether the situation can be easily fixed, on the spot. So you tell a person to check smile or clothing, but not that person has a zit. (Spot, zit -- get it?)

Tell them, but be discreet...point to your teeth and motion something is in there to them. They'll appreciate it, I always do.

Tell them, but make sure you do it out of earshot of anyone else. That would embarrass them.
