Cats need something to scratch, its a natural thing for them to do. And if you aren't providing scratch posts/grass/etc for them their essencially going to provide items to scratch themselfs...like you're lovely brand-new couch :)

I recommend a scratching post. And avoidence spray, they sell it for both cats and dogs. Never used it before myself because my cat is an outside cat and does all that great stuff outdoors and pretty much just eats inside. I've heard it works wonders though.

If your cat is an inside cat ONLY, and I mean only because it's considered animal abuse if you do this and your cat goes outside and is unable to "properly defend themselves" -- you can have your cat declawed. Some people are against it but it's perfectly fine as long as you keep them inside where they aren't defenseless. Outside, with no claws, another cat or animal might begin fighting and your cat won't be able to effectively protect it's self. Good luck.

just offer the cat something better to scratch on, and what better than natural wood, find a dead tree stump with good bark (pine, oak, pecan)and make your cat a scratchin post, take the stump about 5-7 inches diameter by 3-4feet high and anchor it on a 2 by 8 inch plank of wood by using some epoxy for wood or gorilla glue which is a expandable type glue that becomes activated by water (so make sure you dont get any on hands or clothing)place the stump on the plank of wood center it in middle and glue it to board(8-10 inches long)you can find the dead stumps for free and find the lumber maybe from friends or at home depot , your total cost should be about less than $10 but more important the furniture will be saved.

There is a spray called bitter apple that is supposed to work. I know it works in keeping the cat out of some areas.
