In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Because, as in any other good drama that has been totally made up by people, the forces of "good" needed an opponent, the forces of "evil." A story loses its dramatic impact if there is no plot line, and to have a plot line, there has to be conflict.

So, the people who made up the Christian god also made up the devil for the purpose of keeping the little sheep in the flock, threatening them with the devil and with hell, keeping them bending knee and handing over money, and for their political and social purposes which included keeping women suppressed and out of any kind of political power or autonomy.

Too bad it doesn't have a happy ending like other fictional stories do.

God did not create the devil!
He created one (of the 3 most
powerful angels in heaven.)
His name was Lucifer (which
means "light giver".) He was
so beautiful that it was hard
for other angels to look upon him. The other two remaining
all powerful angels are
Michael (the archangel) and
Gabriel (the messenger).
but there was "fault" found in
Lucifer in that he believed that
he could be more powerful
than God Almighty.
The Lord could not allow that, so He cast down satan
and all his following angels,
which became demonic
spirits and they were sent to
this planet.
They were abiding on this
planet when the Lord God
made man, who was to
conquer the devil and his
hoards. God gave Earth to
humans and gave us the
way to have dominion over the earth. Problem: People
are still listening and following
the devil, so this old war has
never ended and never will--
until Jesus has to come back
and settle it once and for all.

The "devil" as you call it, was not created by god, but with god. There is no good without evil, no yin without yang, no high without low.

The only way to prove holiness is to show unholiness. As the old saying goes, it takes 2 to tango.

When god was created, there had to be an equal, opposite deity to prove who god truly was. The monotheistic trend simply changed the order of creation, and creator, while making one ultimately victorious. If an all-knowing, all-powerful, all-loving god were any of those things, god would, by nature, destroy the devil and rid all of us of the temptations, sins, etc that plague our world.

God did not create evil. The devil introduced evil into the universe before man was created. He was the greatest angel God created. His name was Lucifer. Lucifer decided to turn against God. Lucifer said " I will not serve."

Not serving God is the essence of evil. Evil is the absence of good. It is the moving away from good. It is not an equal power. It can never defeat good because in the end, God will defeat evil. Good can exist without evil. Evil comes out of choice. That is why dualism is dead wrong.

Yeah; it's a question I've asked theists for decades.
They weasel their way out of it by changing the subject cos it's one of the MANY holes in their faith - the concept of The Devil was made up by the scammers; they had to have an evil thing they could blame evil onto.

The whole existence of Evil tears at the credibility of Xianity.
I have seen it described very well as The Inconsistent Tetrad*, and it is this:
God is omniscient (all knowing).
God is omnipotent (all powerful).
God is morally perfect.
Evil Exists.
Most theists would be quick to concede to each of these four premises, however, as the name implies, accepting all four leads to an inconsistency.
Here is the proof: If God is omniscient, and He is aware that evil exists, and If He was morally perfect, then He would certainly want to eliminate this evil. And if He is omnipotent, then … He has the power to eliminate evil … But evil exists.
Therefore, at least one of the premises has to be false.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. (Steven Weinberg)

The devil, was formally a good angel, who with time decided that he was way too important and powerful to stay and obey God. He turned against him and became a 'dark angel' aka Devil. God told him that he has no place for him in heaven and said that he should leave.
That's the story =)

This is what I believe and what my church teaches on this topic...before this earth was created we all lived in a pre-mortal world or pre-existence. A plan was brought before us, a plan for the earth. A place where we would be tried and tested. I guess to be truly tried, we have to have good and bad. So we can chose. That is what free agency is all about.

You know that this perfect person you have met would only be yours for a few years then pass on out of life beyond any hope of reaching: Would you simply say having a perfect mate for 5-50 years and losing them would not be worth your time?
