It depends entirely on what you want from a beach. Coogee and Bronte are great family beaches as are many others both north and south of the harbour. Any of the ocean beaches are good for surfers with the best beach depending on wind and waves on the day. There are harbour beaches with quiet water for those who don't like surf. There are nude beaches, topless beaches, gay beaches, beaches which are good for barbecues, beaches where you go to be seen, beaches where you won't see anyone else. Manly and Bondi are both great beaches. The North Shore silvertails prefer Manly, the eastern suburbanites prefer Bondi. Bondi is the most famous beach.

There isn't a "best" beach in Sydney there is a multitude of great beaches. Your preference might not be mine but be assured there is a beach for everyone.

In my opinion, Manly is because it's got the corso, so you can do all your beach shopping before you go for a swim. And it's kind of Bohemian mixed with surf culture. It also has plenty of walkways and cycleways, because it's quite a long beach. And if you get there and the surf is too big for you, Shelley Beach is just a short, barefoot five minute walk away along the footpath that starts near the Manly Surf club. It is protected because it faces away from the ocean and if you were brave enough, you could even swin directly from the surf at Manly straight to the protection of Shelley Beach opposite (recommended for strong swimmers only.)

Freshwater Beach in Harboard is the next beach north of Manly and that's really good because it's not a very long beach and is protected on either side by quite prominent headlands so you don't get many strong rips there.

Bondi is just a tourist trap. Sure, go there to see it if you haven't seen it before, or maybe for the nightlife, but it's surprisingly ugly. The reason for its fame is because it's the closest beach to the Central Business District (CBD), so tourists know about it. Sure it's got good night life, but it's quite dangerous for swimming because of the ocean currents at work, and most of the buildings are surprisingly run down.

This question is so easy to answer.

Cable Beach at Broome, Western Australia is easily the best beach about.

I haven't googled it but I'm sure it must get a mention as being the best about.

I've had to edit this because I didn't read the question properly. Broome is obviously not in Sydney - but well worth the trip across just to see the beach!

It depends what you want. My opinion of Collaroy is that it is a horrible beach, for example and Bondi is not much better.

My personal favourites are the beaches north of Mona Vale, but that is where I grew up, so I know them best. A lot depends on swell size and direction.

Collaroy is a nice family beach.
Bondi is best for young singles. It's one of the topless beaches.
Palm Beach is for picnic and beach.

Have fun.
