Ever been to Cuba? If you have checked in and checked baggage and then don't board the flight they will be very unhappy with you. Maybe even enough for a trip to the US all-inclusive resort club at Guantanamo Bay.
If you don't check in the airline will gladly keep your money and then re-sell your seat at full fare.
