Abortion has been around for a long time. Thou shall not murder, doesn't say a woman can't remove a baby from her womb before it is ready to come out. So where in the Bible does it say that a woman cannot have an abortion?

I am asking because in Jewish law a woman can have an abortion, under certain circumstances. So I was wondering if it made it into the bible or not.
I am not trying to debate between prolife or prochoice.

Ok I see I need to revamp my question. We call terminating a pregnacy an abortion today, so lets just understand that women just didn't start getting abortions in the 20th & 21st centuries. In ancient times women took herbs to exspell a fetus, so my question is where does it say in the bible that a woman cannot exspell a fetus?
Bex, I looked up those sections, and you make a very good point, but to me it sounded like they were speaking to the men of harming a pregnant woman.
I guess I am looking for where the bilbe is talking to women.

Exodus 21:22, 23 says that if a man in anyway harmed the fetus (even unintentionally) he was to be punished and in Ps.139:13-16 the writer says that god saw even the embryo of him.So god views the life of an unborn child as valuable and therfore (seeing as we aren't supposed to kill) abortion is wrong from a biblical stand point.

Most of the anti-abortion people I have heard refer to the commandment: Thou shalt not kill. But most people agree that refers to murder, not killing in self-defense. And a young woman who would see her life as ruined, or whose health would be greatly endangered by a full-term pregnancy, might reasonably conclude that it is self-defense to rid herself of an unwanted pregnancy. Certainly she might reasonably conclude that if the pregnancy was a result of rape or incest.

I do not, in general, approve of abortion, because I think it needs to be the very last resort when all other options have been examined. But there's no getting around the fact that it must be the pregnant woman's decision. Or her parents (or a judge) if she is too young. And believe me, it's amazing how young a girl can get pregnant: long before her body is grown enough to carry a baby full term.

The bible is talking directly to you in the ten commandments where it says as you seem to know vaguely not to murder. Life begins at conception making your point moot.
Is it permissible in the Torah law or the secular Jewish law of today?
Abortion is murder and that should be reason enough even if that life means nothing to you.

The Biblical writers didn't have the word abortion in their terminology...that in no way means that it is 'okay' by God's standards. And you can have all the abortions that you want to, just be ready to explain it to God when He asks.
But I'll give you credit for belittle human life just a step further by saying 'removed from her body'...My friend is pregnant and showed me her 7 week ultrasound and that BABY has arms and legs!! For crying out loud it's a BABY!!

Thats like saying: Where in the Bible does it say a person cannot shoplift? Look at the word "Abortion" What does it mean to "abort?" Abort simply means to stop something already in progress. In the military, the enemy may have knowledge of a coming attack, in this instance, the commander may choose to abort the mission already in progress. The fundamental meaning of the word "abort" is to stop something already in progress. When referring to an unborn baby, what is it, that is in progress, that we choose to stop? Are we choosing to stop death?...No. The baby is growing and developing. This is life at its beginning stages, it is how we all started out. So, if not death, what are we choosing to stop? The fetus is a growing human being and to "abort" it, is to stop it's life in the womb. The word "abort" means to stop something already in progress before it reaches maturity. The word itself implies "Life" already in progress. God Bless You....Peace.

In one of the ten commandments it says thou shalt not kill does it not? Abortion is killing an unborn child, yes a child that has not yet been born is a child nonetheless.

It doesn't specifically. For you to interpret the commandment against murder as pertaining to abortion, you'd have to assume a fetus to be considered a life. Some people do and some people don't

It doesn't because they didn't have that back then. But thou shall not kill also applies for this one.
