it was for me...i found that i could not for the life of me satisfy my own heart with anything and everything i could do and obtain...all i had was 'stuff'...and 'stuff' doesn't last, and quite often 'stuff' is poisonous to the soul...coming to terms with the notion that "i'm not in charge here, i'm not the master of all i survey, and i don't understand the questions-to say nothing of knowing the answers" is a scary thing-but it is the beginning of peace-i know it sounds corny, but my life, my sanity, and my soul were rescued when i decided to 'let go and let God'

No, it's really the appropriate response when someone else has found them coming up short on what is asked of them. Famous examples, Paris Hilton, Michael Vick, Tedd Haggard, & Larry Craig. If no one can prove the wrong doing, most people feel it appropriate to deny that any wrong doing occured.
Oh, you mean that spiritual surrender thing... well, for that, I'd have to say that the appropriate time to surrender is dependent on whether or not your god asks you too. Most gods don't, they just want you to be good people, but some gods do, and demand tribute as well. I try to stay away from those that serve such gods. If the voice in their heads tells them to, they're likely to try to kill their kids and anyone else in order to prove their faith, instead of proving their goodness.

The best time is when checkmate becomes a fact. Concede defeat when the game's over, because otherwise is a worse disgrace than losing.

You surrender? To what? To the police or your minister or your wife or your grandma? If you have done something that requires an apology, then apologize. I wouldn't think you ever would need to surrender unless you have broke the law.

never.
if you see yourself coming up short for something, go for it anyways. you will fail; but you would have tried. it's cliche, but very true. there's a weird satisfaction from failing miserably despite a valiant effort.

that's part of it... but the most important part is "thank you for loving me enough to pay the penalty for my wrong already. I recieve your free gift of righteousness and eternal life. Thanks for not wanting me to die and suffer the consequences"
