I have always thought that actions spoke much louder than mere words. Why are so many people obssessed with wordy and flowery 'prayers', as if God was compelled to respond, same as some demon who is captured by a spell and a chant?

Does He become enchanted by diamonds and gold crosses and arcane symbols, and have to do tricks?
Does He really care who wins a football game, as if He has a few pence bet on it? 'For God's Glory?' (barf)

Good question. Maybe such showy stuff is a remnant from days of giving offerings to gods?

Some people like to hear themselves talk and then there are people who haven't taken time to understand God, they probably think long or elaborate prayers will get their prayer answered.
I believe God understands our actions but don't believe God needs "flowery" prayers. Don't think chants or wordy prayers are necessary either or jewelry in the form of crosses or beads but these things are for our benefit meaning human beings need to identify with things we can see and touch so I think crosses and objects are for human use.
I think God appreciates our communicating with it because God is a personal and social being. I have the experience of God answering my prayers, not just for myself but I see how God has responded to prayers for my family. For instance I prayed for my aunt to take better care of herself and I said this prayer on more than one occasion and it's been about a year, saw her recently and she has lost 40lbs and is still working on quitting smoking, she's smoked since she was 15.
Even though I think God leaves winning of games up to human ability I think God listens to those prayers too. I don't believe God finds anything we say in prayer insignificant and is always listening to us when called upon because I believe God cares about all of us including those that don't believe, just as the bible says god lets the sun shine on saint and sinner, God listens to the believer and nonbeliever.

Just because a person portrays good actions does not mean that they know God or the ways of God. God is not impressed with flowery prayers or any type of prayer if your heart is not right with Him. God delights in the prayers of His children because He loves us and desires for us to push forward in our Christian race and cross over the finish line, heaven.

All that is a product of a terrible understanding with respect to God in general. Basically what people pray to is really a god of their own mind, their own construct. The scriptures and what it shows is not God, the scriptures are allegorical and the God in them is allegorical. Basically people pray to the universe and the earth and don't know it. There is some truth that the universe responses to our thinking, if we feed the intention.

Truth be told, people create many gods.

EDIT - nora Abraham didn't literally exist, scripture is a spiritual allegory. Paul even says Abraham and his wives are allegories.

paul, you have truly hit on something important...i believe that God sees our actions, hears our words, but more importantly, knows our thoughts and feelings-He can be mocked, ignored, disobeyed, even reviled, but He can't be deceived!
a thousand flowing musical phrases publicly presented in full view of all and sundry cannot match, i believe, a heartfelt and simple 'i love you, Lord'...
as for winning games or wars for 'His glory'...i think that rather than fussing over whether God is on 'my side', we each should be asking ourselves if we are on 'His side!'

'God' is a figment of Abraham's imagination, which was picked up by authority figures and turned into a shill for money and power.

You would gain more benefit from worship of your ancestors or the Sun, actually.
