You will always be bipolar. Sad but true.
The mood stabilizer keeps you from showing symptoms and are designed to be taken daily for the rest of your life. I went off my medication and lasted almost 1 year before I had another episode. You will have one too eventually. You have to decide if you want to be moody, depressed, hypomanic, and manic sometimes all at once and thin or, stable and a little chubby. I've ben on my medications daily for 3 years. I've gained weight but I've also gained clarity and peace. I'll take the weight.
Your choice babe.

It probaly will return. My doctor is about to put me on a Mood Stabilizer that does not cause weight loss (because i have issues with food and he knows it wouldnt do me very well to put on weight) as soon as I find out the name of it ill let you know, so you can go see your doctor about it. Or alternatively go ask your doctor for one that doesnt cause weight gain, i think the only problem about these ones are that they tend to be a bit more expensive than the other ones, but its worth it if you dont want the weight gain side effect!
Good luck!

Sorry...I don't think BiPolar is a CURABLE disease!! So that said....Yes, your mood swings will probably come back. Are you on anything else for BiPolar, like AD's or Antipsychotics? Sometimes those can help thwart mood changes. How about changing to a different mood stabilizer there are many out there.
Talk to your P-doc.
Good Luck

Everyone is different, sometimes you can go for years without medication and feel perfectly OK.
I did for seven years and thought I'd 'Grown Out' of bipolar disorder. But after a very stressful year it did come back.
You know the old saying: It's best to be safe than sorry!

Your symptoms will probably return. Ask your doctor for a different type of mood stabilizer. You can also research on Web MD what are the side effects of the different meds.
My son is bi-polar; he takes abilify and depakote and he gained a lot of weight when he first started taking them. But now he has leveled out.

once bipolar always bipolar. you need to find a good mood stabilizer and stay on it no matter what because each time you go off of your meds the longer it takes to get back to a good point and if you do it too many times then you may never get back to that point. i work in the mental health field and see this all of the time, so PLEASE get back on your meds and stay on them.

Did your dr. tell you to discontinue your medications? I didn't think so. You just quit on your own.
That is the #1 problem with bipolars is that they get to feeling well emotionally and bail out on their meds. Then they hit bottom again and get sent to phosp. That was not a smooth move.
Get back to your dr. ASAP. Get back on a bipolar medication and point out to your dr. that your old medication was unacceptable because of the weight gain, and would he please prescribe something that has as a side-effect, losing weight. If not, a pill that helps in losing weight, would be warranted. He stuck you with the pill, you waited to tell him until you'd put on too much weight, so you quit...now make him clean up the mess. Do it now, because you ARE still bipolar, and it's gonna bite you on the buut if you don't do something to prevent it.

these drugs are long term for the most part. you also cant just stop taking them cold. you have to wean off of them. some of the newer ones are said not to have such an effect on your appetite and weight gain. i would definetly keep going to a phychiatrist and stay on something. 4 or 5 months is not at all going to help you. good luck.

Bipolar DOES NOT GO AWAY. It is TREATABLE, not cureable. There are a ton of meds to choose from. Don't give up because one didn't work.
In other words, yes you will be bipolar again.
