I find it interesting that Americans defend the killing of hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki (by the atomic bomb) by saying that it would save the lives of our brave troops. So why doesn't the same priority of saving our troops' lives before saving foreigners' lives apply today?

Protect American troops over iraqis, hands down. You draw a parallel between Japan and Iraq, so in this regards, you just cant simply drop the A bomb on Iraq and the problem will be solved. In fact that would trigger WWIII and nuclear war fare. We arent the only ones with nukes, and theres a reason why another bomb like that hasnt been dropped since WWII. Also like labdoctor so eloquently put it, we try to maintain a democracy so Iran doesnt take it over. We are facing an army that has no nation and hides within the civilian population, unlike the Japanese, who's military is obviously a Japanese military.

If after all those years the various groups in Irak can't / won't come to an understanding, then let them kill each other off. They seem to enjoy it , seem to think that hate of the other guy is the Only Solution (The Final Solution?). They do not understand the concept of "compromise", and even one more day spent there is a waste of time a waste of money and a waste of American - and allied - lives. Ditto for Afghanistan. It's unfortunate, but it's their (muslim and Arabo-whatever ) problem. If they can't sit down and start to TRY to find a solution (and that Sunni Shiite one is a huge one), then we'll never see the end of it.

Personaly its the job of America to defend aour nation and the rest of the world. America is the Police and the rest of the world must be kept in order.

IF we leave, it will be the best thing that has happened to Iraq since the invasion. What the real concern here by Bush and his cronies is that those Middle Eastern countries now know that the US cannot be trusted. So as I predicted five years ago, the Middle East will emerge as ONE. And when they do, (it won't take that many years), the US will emerge as a fragile nation, who made a huge mistake.

Don't get it do you? We are trying to preserve what fragile democracy they have.
We leave, Iran moves in. Get it? Maybe you don't get it, tough to see when you wear blinders.
About the A-bomb, ask your grandad if it was worth it.
