I have a school project asking why! Can Anyone Help??

It was a gift. The French saw that immigrants were starting to move out of eastern europe to the USA, and the French believing strongly in the American ideal of liberty decided to built a statue to commemorate this country's anniversary and ideals.

France built it and took it apart, shipped it here in pieces where it was installed off NY harbor. They gave it to the US to celebrate the centennial.
