Take it from someone who's had them so bad several doctors have told me they'd never seen such bad cold sores...

Some people don't get them bad and they can simply go buy a tube of Carmex at the drugstore and apply it a few times a day like you would with chapstick.

If your cold sore is truly "nasty" (like mine used to be) this is what you should do. Go to your doctor and get a prescription for Valtrex. Follow your doctors directions. Buy a tube of Abreva and put it on WITH A QTIP as many times a day as possible. Some people tell you to keep it moist but you really are trying to dry it out...since before it scabs up its just a big pussy bulge of fluid. Scabs are good! Once it starts to scab, keep doing the abreva. Eventually the scabs will start to lift as you use the qtip. It might hurt a bit but that's a good thing. Once the scab lifts, put more abreva on and then put on Aquaphor (the stuff you use on Tattoos) with a qtip. The Aquaphor will speed healing and lessen scarring.

In the future, at the very first sign of a cold sore coming on (a tingle or the tiniest little bump) go to the drugstore and get Valtrex...take 2 pills right away and 2 pills 12 hours later. (Your doctor should have several refills on file for you). This will shorten your outbreaks by up to 2 weeks depending on how severe they are.

By doing these things (Keeping it dry, using those 3 medicines, using a qtip at all times), I have gone from 6-7 cold sores a year for 2 weeks at a time to 1-2 a year and they now only last about 4 days! Good luck.

As far as this fever blister, I agree with the person who said abreva... I get fever blisters about 2 times a year in the same place and my dermatologist just gave me a prescription for valtrex and she says to use it at the first sign of a cold sore and it will decrease the outbreak a lot... maybe you could do the same if you get them frequently... good luck

I use rubbing alcohol. It really helps in the initial stages by keeping down the swelling. You'll still have the cold sore for a few days but it will look better and feel better during that period.

Campho-phenique! Takes the heat and soreness away, but not sure about the 'quickly' part, tho. Main thing is to apply it the minute you know one is en route to a lip near you!
