Often if the puppy has something stuck in its throat it will whine loudly and wildly as if it is in extreme pain. It will most likely be abnormally salivating. If you can see the foreign object then it is ok to try and remove it with your fingers although there is a very big risk of the puppy inadvertently biting your fingers. If you cannot see what is causing the blockage do not attempt to remove it with your fingers as you could end up worsening the injury of your puppy. With a small puppy you can hold them up by their back legs and with their head hanging down open up their mouth with your free hand and pull outwards on their tongue. It is likely that with this the foreign object will fall out. If not you should proceed immediately to the Heimlich maneuver. Be careful when performing the Heimlich on small puppies as you could inadvertently break a rib or cause internal damage if you squeeze too hard. If you have a large puppy dog lay them so that their head is hanging down and opening their mouth quickly clean out their throat while pulling outwards on their tongue. Again if this doesn't work then proceed immediately to the Heimlich maneuver. If after removing the blockage the puppy is still not breathing or is breathing extremely shallow then begin with artificial respiration (mouth to mouth) and if the puppy has no pulse then begin CPR. Call the vet!

If possible try to open the pet's mouth to inspect for food, toys or other objects caught in the back of the throat but be cautious about the potential for being bitten. Sometimes a "choking" sound can actually be a normal or vigorous "clearing of the throat" to remove accumulated mucous or phlegm. Tonsillitis, a "sore throat" or an irritated throat from the dog swallowing irritants can trigger what seems like choking. In true choking, the animal will be in severe distress, salivate, paw at the mouth and have difficulty breathing. Long nosed pliers or a forceps can be helpful in grasping an object caught deep in the throat. You may also use quick but gentle chest compression in an attempt to force air from the lungs to dislodge an object. By placing your hands on opposite sides of the chest and cautiously but quickly compressing the chest to mimic a cough you may be able to expel an object lodged at the larynx. Call your veterinary attention immediately.

Hi, well the last time i had to do this my wolf was choking. she has since passed but not because of that. i put my hand in her mouth to see if i could feel anything, when i couldn't i gave her the Heimlich maneuver. it was difficult for me to do that considering she weighed 110 pds. if that ever happens to your puppy just be gentle cuz the little one will freak out. oh and , i had her trained to come to me when something was wrong.
