Hi, I am a 17 year old 6th form student in full time education from Leeds and I was wondering if I could get braces even if my dentist says I don't need them? I go to the dentist every 6 months (as you should) and each time he says I don't need braces. The thing is, I really was them because my teeth would look so much better after the treatment. I have been referred to the orthordontist (spelling) a few times and I keep hoping he will he will give me them but again, he says I don't need them. I have heard that if you are under 18 and in full time education you can have braces fitted for free. Is this still the case if I request them rather than being referred?

Thanks.

Found out how to edit lol

"You could actually probably get them on from a college student in the dentistry department.

That would be free, and good practice for them.
Good luck!"

What do you mean?

What country are you in? If an ortho doesn't want to do it, then he's not going to. If you were in the US, any doc would likely take your money and make any possible improvement.

You can get dental treatment free if you're in full time education and under a certain age but why would you want to go through that if its not really neccessary. I had braces when I was 14 and it was the worst thing ever. Every 1 to 2 weeks I had to have the, tightned and it hurt really bad for about 3 days after and I couldn't eat solids whilst it hurt cos it hurt more when I put my teeth together. But I relly needed it. My teeth are too big and they didn't fit so I had to have some taken out and pulled into place cos they were a mess.

If you still want braces you'll probably have to wait till your older and have it done privately which is gonna mean your gonna have to pay a lot. If a professional has a choice of you or someone who really needs braces they're not gonna waste very limited nhs funds on you (i don't mean any offence its just unfortunately thats the state the nhs is in these days).

i think you should see a psychologist. the dentist/ Orthodontist's know what they are talking about when they evaluate you. it seems like youve went and got more then a second opinion. Trust the doctors, braces are a pain (take it from someone who's had them) dont put yourself through unecessary agony when you dont have to. If your teeth move later on in life then go have another eval. but for now dont worry about it.

You havent got a chance having this done for free in the UK now as they have changed their policy that teeth have to really bad to qualify for NHS treatment. Very unfortunate, so you're looking at around £2000.

you live in england...yea don't listen to your dentist...my mom had that problem when she was in england and she had an overbite...but we live in the US now and she got her braces here about 10 years ago i think...they are really annoying in england about the whole braces thing...they always say that to a lot of the patients..even to one of my cousins [she lives in england] and she really needed them...but he kept saying no...she finally decided to get them against what the dentist said and she is SO happy...she's 26...
go for it..
