yes, as a christian, i do think getting to involved in "religion" can hinder your walk with GOD... you get so involved in the "religion" part, that you lose sight of what you are really there here for.and youre right about phil being wrong... JESUS actually preached against religion.

Looks like this question is all about defining your terms carefully. At what point does relationship with God become religion?
If a person tells somebody else that God wants them to eat marshmallows all the time, and live in a tent in the Andes, has that person become a religion?
In Christianity, shared practice have been established since the beginning. If jesus intended to start a religion, and Christianity is defined as trying to follow Jesus, then organised religion has the potential to assist people in knowing and understanding Jesus' teachings
Perhaps a good point would be to look at the relationship between religion and government. In the 4th century, when Christianity became the standard religion of the roman empire, hundreds of thousands of people became "Christians" without really knowing what it meant, as it was the new thing. Like owning an IPOD but not having a pc.
Religion when it gathers like-minded people together with integrity can only serve to enable those people to live out their beliefs more fully. When religion gathers people without shared beliefs then the religion loses its integrity, and does not support the individuals as it should.
To say that Religion of itself hinders Christians is too vague. to say that estabished religion can be a challenge to a Christian is certainly true.
Hope that helps.

God is with us when we feel the first autumn breeze. He is with us when we hear a child's cry after birth. God is with is when we bury a loved one and feel we cannot go on.
Jesus never preached in a church. There is not a thing wrong with most organized religions, but God knows what is in your heart if we are not lighting candles every Sunday morning and sitting on the front pew.
Nothing hinders true faith in God; God is all around us every step of the way.

If religion is patterned after the salvation blueprint outlined in the NT, then it does not hinder the Christian journey to eternal life with God.

Yes. Religion is supposed to be a tool for helping us collectively worship God and become better individuals.
But as usual, humans are lazy and weak, and instead of doing the hard work of loving each other and treating each other like Jesus would have, some of them take the easy way out and start worshiping their religion instead of God. Or else they'll worship the bible instead of the One the bible points to. Or they'll use their hobbled religion as a way to make themselves feel superior to people who aren't members.
I agree. When a religion becomes fundamentalist, it not only hinders Christians' walk with God, it actually negates it.

Both are very broad terms, don't you think.
Religion at its best does not hinder a person in their walk with God. However, religion when it is abused (as in power) creates problems.

i think fanatical devotion to religion, which is manmade, can often cloud people's judgment.
ex: i don't understand why the pope gets to mandate what TYPE of birth control a married, monogamous couple can use. where in the bible is this mandated? how is the pill/condom/diaphragm harmful to being a christian? remember, the pope is a man. you may consider him to be a holy man, but he is a man nonetheless. that means he is fallible and errs just like all of us.
i don't understand why some people get so caught up in the manmade rules and rituals of religion. it seems that it would distract from the divine word of god.

Yes, Walking with GOD is Reality.
Religion is man made and operates in the Mental Realm.
Religion cannot Save you (Recreate your Spirit).
Getting Saved and Walking with GOD operates in the Spiritual Realm and Mental Realm and Physical Realm (Miracles!).

That is a valid point, religion is man attempting to reach out to God but Christianity is God reaching out to man. Man will never on his own be able to reach God but God reaches man.

I think it hinders a lot of Christians from their walk with the rest of humanity, especially those of differing beliefs.
