Today marks the 10th Week that I have covered for an open position here at my company - along with my regular position & duties. The pay rate for that position is $52,000.00 per year or $1,000.00 a week. To date I have saved our Company $10,000.00 or 10 weeks of salary that has NOT been paid out. I notified my boss in the beginning that if covering the position lasted longer than 2 weeks I wanted a bonus of somekind. But now it has been 10 weeks and we finally are seeing some qualified candidates for the job. My boss is very cheap I will MAD if he offers me a check for $500.00 or something. The extra work has really been weighing down on me I believe I deserve more. What SHOULD I be receiving? Is there a standard? Note: Covering empty positions is NOT part of my job description.

In the day and age of downsizing the company has the option not to fill the job at all and assign the duties to you as part of your job now. I would bet that if you have a written job description there is a sentence in it that says "Any and all other duties as assigned by management." This covers changes to your existing duties as business needs change. I get new duties and projects assigned to me all the time. I've never received additional compensation as it's all part of getting the work done and the business to stay open and operating.

You can ask your boss if you will get a bonus for pitching in with these extra duties, but if you have to bring that to the attention of your boss to get recognized then maybe you need to step back and think about why that is. Do you complain to him/her a lot? Do you get angry when new tasks are given to you?

I don't think that you have any leg to stand on. My job a couple of jobs ago, I was covering at least 5 jobs, including my own and was compensated *squat* for it... plus was torn a new one at my one and only review.

About your job description: I am sure that if you look at the fine print of your description, there is a clause that states somthing like "any other duties that may arise." This would include covering another position.

are you management? salary or hourly. Union or Non Union. All of these things matter. if you are a salary worker who is not represented by a Union be grateful for whatever you end up with out of the deal. Perhaps a promotion to the position you're covering if its more money they you currently make. Otherwise, You are likely doing the "taking one for the team" scene.
