I just can't figure it out...

It depends on what kind of cord is it; if you are assigned to the Infantry, you put your blue Infantry cord on the right side while your French or Belgian Fourrageire, depending on the unit you are assigned, goes on the left side.

In the case of the German Schutzenschnur (German weapons qualification ford), that one goes on the right side; the location will depend on the regulation (AR 670-1) and the type of cord you are entitled to wear on your uniform.

Yep what tercelclub said. Most of the cords Ive seen connect to the button on your shoulder strap(?) whatever the high speed word for it is. The German marksmanship badge, (cant spell it off the top of my head) I had to sew buttons on to button each end to the jacket.
