http://www.aila.org/content/default.aspx?docid=12396 I was doing some researching and this popped up...so all the idiots who claim we need to stop legal immigration what do you think of these numbers...

"To compensate for the loss of revenue caused by a moratorium would require increasing Social Security taxes on Americans by $506 billion in present value over 50 years and $611 billion over 75 years. Such a tax increase would cost an American earning $60,000 in 2004 more than $1,860 in higher payroll taxes over the next 10 years.

A 33 percent increase in legal
immigration would increase revenues to Social Security by a present value of $169 billion over 50 years and $216 billion over 75 years. A 20 percent legal immigration increase would add $101 billion in present value to the trust fund over 50 years and $128 billion over a 75-year period.

You can go to page 7 for a pretty good chart and the sources.

what say you Tancredo lovers....

but Lori, there was a question where it asked if we should make immigration easier and I had an awful impression that the people on your side think we have enough people in this country and we dont need more...please dont play devil's advocate.

sorry Calliope, I just spend some time on here and I get used to people calling me a Mexican loving terrorist because I tend not to be a "yes" man and I just felt like adding a little humor into the question.

Lori I love the way you spew your hate towards illegal immigrants. You hate each and every one of them and you think they are the scum of the Earth but I would expect a little more sense from you considering you experienced the current system. I bet, no I guarantee, your tone would change rapidly if your son in law would've got caught up in the bureaucracy of the current immigration system and was to be an illegal.

What do you say to the people who tried to come legally but failed because of the broken system? What do you say to the people who cant adjust their status?

I happen to agree with you on this. Legal immigrants bring a positive contribution to the society here in the United States.
I also agree the system is at best cumbersome, and at worst completely broken and needs to be either overhauled, or dismantled completely to put an efficient system in place that actually works in a timely manner for legal immigrants.

Oh wait...we're talking about the Feds...
Never gonna happen....
What was I thinking....adding in common sense to a system that lacks same.

I've often pointed out that one of the driving forces behind our governments willful disregard of our immigration laws is the political need to prop up an increasingly impractical Social Security system. They've already raised Social Security taxes from 2% to 15.3%, so further increasing the burden on workers to cover retirees isn't a great option. Since SS is a regressive tax (you pay it no matter how little you make, but stop paying it once you've earned a certain amount, making it a much greater burden on the poor than the rich), adding more workers to pay into it with each generation is the only way to keep it solvent.

It's a classic pyramid scheme. Retirees are paid benefits out of the funds collected by current workers, who thus 'earn' benefits when they retire. It works only so long as there are many more worker than retirees - but, declining fertility and greater lifespans have thrown a monkey wrench in that. Other than euthanizing retirees, the only way to keep the ponzi scheme going is to grow the base of the pyramid. Since Americans aren't doing that themselves, that means importing population.

So, yeah, in that sense, the SSA do oversee a socialist system, and they do just love immigration.

People should never fault you for doing your research and you definitely did yours. I agree that the SSA is enjoying the "free" money that is pumped in by illegal immigration, with all the abuse that our legislators do to raid the fund every time they need money using illegal immigrants who pay into the Social Security system without a thought of getting it back should not surprise anyone.

I also think this is why the United States/Mexico totalization agreement has not been sent to congress because if it were many illegal immigrants would probably be entitled to Social Security at some point from the United States and then we would be in deep doo doo.

I do not agree with your side on many issues but I can agree with you that our government is an equal opportunity abuser (both citizen taxpayers and taxpayers who happen to be in the country illegally)..

The thumbs down is to your right ------------------->

A star for your attempt to enlighten folks on both sides, sometimes its not so simple.

EDIT:

Actually the directions to the thumbs down was for all the anti's who are going to pummel me with thumbs down, lol...

I liked your question it was intelligent and thought provoking and backed up by facts and figures.... it made people use their brains for more than a hat rack.

Well, illegal immigration costs California about $10 billion per year in education and benefits as I understand it, which is 500 billion over your 50 years right there. Surely the other states suffer somewhat.

Also, that doesn't begin to take into account the DRAIN on funds when they are injured or become old, does it?

I agree with you on this Petey, legal immigrants are good for the country and not just with the social security issue either.

I don't know if halting legal migration is an objective of any rational thinking person. Illegal immigration and it's attendant fake SS numbers, ID theft, and tax evasion, however, needs to be halted to dead cold stop.

The problem is ILLEGAL ALIENS NOT LEGAL IMMIGRANTS. Don't be dense.

***Edit***
Don't try to put words into MY mouth in a feeble attempt to make your nonsensical argument look stronger. I'm a strong supporter of immigration. In fact, I'd love to see our immigration quotas for every country increased by 25-50% AFTER all illegal aliens are deported.

I think illegals steal opportunity from other hopefuls around the world. I have a LEGAL immigrant son-in-law and I'm very proud that he's done everything above board, even though it was very difficult for him. He's a fine, upstanding man who will make a wonderful citizen precisely because he respects the laws of my country.

What do I say to people who can't "adjust their status" (whatever that means.)

***"GET OUT!"***

Why do they feel the "need" to come to the U.S.?
Russia is losing population and "needs" immigration.
And we should take a break on all immigration.
About ten years with no immigration.

You are being disingenuous. You are saying "immigrant" but you mean "illegal alien". Isn't that a bit like lying? Or is it exactly lying?
