I have a 4 month old kitten who is out of control. He is not happy unless every table, counter, shelf in the entire place empty. He is so sweet and lovable but just likes to make a mess. any suggestions?

it's a normal kitten phase. He'll settle down considerably in the next few months.

Keep him busy with toys, especially ones he can play with by himself -- battery-operated mice that move and squeak when he touches them, an inexpensive toy called a Cat Dancer that swoops and moves like a bug when he bats at it, etc.

Whenever your cat is doing something that he isn't supposed to ie: getting on counters and tables, spray him with either a water bottle or a squirt gun. Most cats don't enjoy getting wet so that will eliminate the problem. It will take quite a few attempts to get it through the cats head, but it will eventually get the idea: whenever I get on counter, I get wet. If your cat does like water, (few and far between) instead of using the water, use a rolled up newspaper. Same idea. Also make sure that he has plenty of toys. Especially ones that dangle. Maybe one of the door knob toys or hang them from the ceiling if possible. My cats used to do the same thing when they were kittens and the water has worked on them all. After many squirts of course.

Sounds like hes bored. Try toys that distract him and keep him active and dont require alot of your time. The hanging mice on a bungy works well and attaches to the door ways. Anything that has movement like the plastic disc (looks like a doughnut with a lost cutout the outside ring) with a ball that slides around and around is a favorite for my cat.

Good luck!

He needs toys of his own or he's goiing to find anything that moves and shove them onto the floor.

Get him a pack of ping pong balls, some catnip toys, rubber balls, anything, and make sure there's at least 5 per room to keep him occupied. He's burning off a lot of energy at 4 months, you've got another 2 months at least of this, so it's going to continue for a while.

Kittens are like that... he'll settle down approximately 6-7 months.

Though, my male kitty just turned a year old and he's pretty wild. BUT he is definately calmer then he was at 5 months when I got him.

Most babies do the same thing. Babies are gonna make messes. About all you can do is put things out of his reach.
