Greyhounds as pets?

Question

I cannot believe three people have given negative responses to my praising greyhounds for being brilliant pets.
Did they think i was taking the piss???
I have genuinely had two ex racers as pets and cried like a baby when they passed away.
They are the most affectionate dogs i have ever encountered.

People think they know it all and they like to condemn any breed that they don't personally have. Greyhounds are awesome dogs.
I think any breed is capable of being wonderful and any breed can be a monster! No breed is for everybody, but they are all wonderful animals. There are breeds I wouldn't choose simply because they don't fit my needs and lifestyle but it's not because they aren't great.
Don't stress it, people can be morons.

Red - you are one of the morons I was talking about. Please leave the pet area.

You're right - greyhounds make wonderful pets, I've had a couple, currently have a rescue lurcher too. They're a vastly overlooked breed, so many (thousands) dying every year. If more people boycotted the races and adopted a grey, the industry might just get the hint.

Nice to see so many people sticking up for them, they're gentle loving dogs who make wonderful family pets.

I've never heard anything but good things about adopting greyhounds. I'm glad there are people like you promoting the breed. I think every dog deserves favor, even if it's not the breed you happen to like personally it's still a worthy dog :)

How nice to see someone who really cares. I am not in a position to have a dog at the mo but if I were it would be a greyhound - and a rescue one at that.

The consequencies of greyhound racing are too great for it to be allowed to continue. Anyone who really cares for animals should boycott these sad exhibitions of greed and cruelty.

Greyhounds ARE lovely dogs. Its such a shame so many of them are put on the scrap heap when not able to race anymore. I know a few people that have taken in ex racers, thank goodness for people like you.

i personally have not had the experiance of owning greyhounds but i have had a lurcher (now have 2 collies)which are similar. I never saw your last question but i cannot belive people can't see how good pets these dogs would make. Give them their daily walk and run and they are calm and affectionate dogs and i would consider owning one(their is a rescue center near where i live for retired racing dogs)

Greyhounds are adorable, and they make great pets! I should know, my friend's mom contributes to a rescue for them. I think it's great that you adopted two ex-racers; it's so cruel how they are treated when they are too old to win races anymore.
And Red, that's totally wrong. Dogs don't kill adults or children, and though puppies are sometimes destructive, they don't just "rip the house to shreds.

I have worked at a few different veterinary hospitals for a few years now, and I have loved every greyhound I met. Not to mention the fact that my boss, a DVM, says they are one of the nicest breed of dog you will ever meet. I agree. They are so loyal and kind-hearted. Not to mention obedient in a "I want you to like me" kind of way.

Thank you for helping a few of them find a good home.

It's is well known that Greyhounds makes great pet if you allow them to fly once in awhile. They are impressive dogs. Even tempered and good with kids.
