Dress however you want, and bring a camera if you want as well. Even many natives carry cameras around, especially those who like photography. I do it quite frequently.
The I [heart] NY t-shirt, or other non-sports New York shirt, is the number-one sign of a tourist. Yankees caps can go either way, and Mets caps show likely natives; I'm a Mets fan, but the Mets just don't seem to attract the national bandwagon fanbase that the Yankees do. Boston Red Sox caps, hard to say...they're an out-of-town team, but natives would be the ones who feel they know the city well enough to try wearing them in public.
Any bag that opens behind you is another sign of a tourist. General rule of thumb is that we like to be able to see whatever we're carrying at any given time, so backpacks don't work too well.
But for colors, do whatever you want. Black, white, green, red, you get the idea. Go crazy.
It's all about how you carry yourself. Tourists will often walk slowly, look around, and look up. Natives walk at a faster pace. Walk with a purpose.

you can wear whatever you like!!! there's soo many different types of people living, working in new york and some are trendy/preppy/grungy/posh/etc/etc/etc/etc/etc that it REALLY doesn't matter.
If you dont' want to look like a tourist then don't carry/take pictures of buildings, weird sculptures on the street, etc.. dont' open a subway map in public.
you can always spot a tourist because they don't have confidence aroudn the area. They dont' know hwere they are going so just act like you've been in NY

you can pretty much wear whatever you like, but as someone said before. No I love NY t-shirts.... we always spot tourists by their cameras, maps, them staring all the way up at every building. just be careful where you keep your wallet, and please do not come to a dead stop in the middle of the sidewalk to stare at one of the buildings or shops. You must keep up with the flow or get out of the way.

If you wear black, you will be too hot and be miserable. Manhattan is loaded with tourists and you cant tell with half of them.

Hahhahaha...um..be yourself..trying to hard kind of makes you look even worse..but you know...
no fannypacks..cameras... backpacks.. if you have a bag. make it small and in front of you with one opening facing towards you at all times so you dont get pick pocketed..
dont carry a map.. know how to get a taxi... know the streets..
ummm.
dont be naive* tourists seem to be frequently and get taken advantage of.
