i went camping the other night and we must have caught the attention of a pack of coydogs because they were not coyotes or anything else and we just kept throwing rocks into the woods around the campsite where we heard them and it must have kept them back or there weren't many close but we were ready for them if they attacked. now if they were to attack whats the best thing to do since we have no where to run? we had knives to help if they did decide to attack.

If domestic dogs can attack humans for no apparent reason and not necessarily by so called dangerous breads (see the second story attached) shouldn't a person be all the more concerned about wild pack dogs? We have had coy dogs in our area and they are a brazen breed of dogs that have mixed with coyotes. They are very dangerous and not skittish about humans like normal coyotes. Feral dogs are probably worse. I would be alert and watchful while camping and do whatever it takes to defend myself in the presence of these animals, if indeed they are in your area.

First and foremost, Coys are real.
But they are few and far between, they are loners that are very territorial.
Once a litter reaches adulthood, they tend to scatter.
In all my life in the country I have dealt with around 5 or 6 total, it is “believed” that most coys are sterile and can not reproduce.
I work with and am a licensed Nuisance Wildlife controller in my state.

But I would bet what you encountered is a pack of feral dogs, which do run in packs and can be very brazen and at times even dangerous.

Feral dogs are usually dog that have been dumped or abandoned that turn wild and breed in the wild, until controlled ( euthanized ).

“Most” feral dogs packs are none dangerous to man, but reap havoc on live stock.
I know of two packs that were very aggressive to man in my area, one was a pack of 15 wild Pit-bulls that the state had to ( euthanized ) after it penned a State Wildlife Biologist in his truck un armed.

The other was a pack of wild Doberman that numbered 11 total, that had tried to attack a rancher that the state had to ( euthanized ) that pack as well.

But note that most states because of the Humane Society have laws that block the killing of any feral dogs and cats by any one other then State Law Enforcement personnel.

Very few exceptions to this rule exist, very few.

It is best to contact your local Department of Wildlife conservation and advise them of the problem.

Because of such laws I my self would never confess to shooting any feral cats or dogs in my state.

Not being rude here but.
The Three S rule applies here (Shoot, Shovel and Shut up) for your own safety, from law and beast.

If they were in fact coydogs you need to put them down, they are extremely dangerous.

In your case (assuming you didnt have guns), if I was attacked I would use fire as well as knives. I would build a big fire and have some homemade torches ready to fire when they got close. As a last resort I would put my weak arm in front of me and hope they go for that while I bring my knife up under into the chest, abdomen, or throat. The problem with this is that once one of them attacks you will have several on you and you will go down, unless you got plenty of people with you to form a defensive circle.

A solid semi-auto such as a Glock 45 or 357sig. A shotgun w/an 18" barrel might even be better.

If you're in a "no gun" zone, or your a tree-hugger, try pepper spray.

Glock 20. Ultra reliable and sixteen 750ft.lb hollowpoints ready to rock. Couple of spare mags and you have 46 rounds ready to go. Doubletap Ammo does full power 10mm loads, that's one of the few down sides of the 10mm, most ammo is loaded below 40 Short and Wimpy levels.

If you are to the point that you have to use knives you are to damn close to feral dogs or half breeds. Just take a 100 lb sack of dog food with you and drop it off along the highway as you turn off to go to your camping spot. Preferable about 2 miles away from where you are going to camp.

They are not going to attack. Never have I ever had a coyote or any wild dog attack me. Had one snatch a duck one time, but it didn't come anywhere near me.

They are just dogs, all they have is a mouth. Easy for any self respecting man to take out.
