53 weeks of defensive language training in monterey?

My husband is in the navy and leaving for monterey- dli very soon, and he just told me that he will be there for 53 weeks, and I am trying to find out what languages take 53 weeks to learn there so we can have somewhat of an idea about what his options may be. I know that it will be one of the more difficult languages- does any one have any idea how long the training is for each language? I am also having a hard time deciding whether or not I should go out there with him right now (we have a 2 month old daughter) or wait until December. I am thinking about taking a college class that is 15 weeks long? Any advice would be appreciated. We are still newly weds with our first child.

any of the Cat 4 and 5 Languages take a year or longer. expect Farsi, Persian or Mandarin.

GO to Monterey. there is virtually no waiting list to get into housing, so even though it's an expensive area, that won't be a huge issue. There are a couple of colleges ..CSU Monterey Bay and the local community College where you can take classes.

53 weeks ... sounds like it could be a Middle Eastern Language like Arabic or an Asian Language like Korean. There are many other languages it could be but those two are some of the hot languages that we are in need of right now. If you are thinking about moving down to Monterey for the time he is in DLI then you have to understand that he will have lots of homework and have to study a lot and may not have much time to just relax with you and your kid. Also another thing is that they say it's 53 weeks but that is if it all goes perfect. Sometimes people have to wait a couple of weeks for thier class to start because they go on a cycle and sometimes if you dont do well on tests and need more time to learn a certain lesson of the language then they will kick you back a cycle and therefore extending his time there.

I hope this helps and good luck you both.

Sounds like an asian language (Korean is 63 weeks)- to tell you the truth my husband wounldn't be able to survive the DLI without me. I do everything for him so all he has to worry about is studing - that is the way that it should be. They tell you 53 weeks, but it could be extended - classes change their courses sometimes or he could roll back to a different class. There is not substitute for sleeping next to your husband either. You can take classes out here at CUMB or Monterey Peninsula college - or there are a few schools out in Salinas (about 15 min away) you will love it out here. It is also easier to have 2 parents with a little one. Yes he will study a lot, but he will be happier with you here, and the teachers love it when the wife bakes things for treats. He will have emmersion weekends and other trainings that will take him away for a few days, but it is better than being alone, the military will PCS you so you don't have to worry about moving - I have moved a lot and it was my easiest move ever.
