My husband is in the navy and leaving for monterey- dli very soon, and he just told me that he will be there for 53 weeks, and I am trying to find out what languages take 53 weeks to learn there so we can have somewhat of an idea about what his options may be. I know that it will be one of the more difficult languages- does any one have any idea how long the training is for each language? I am also having a hard time deciding whether or not I should go out there with him right now (we have a 2 month old daughter) or wait until December. I am thinking about taking a college class that is 15 weeks long? Any advice would be appreciated. We are still newly weds with our first child.

If you can get housing on Ft. Ord you would also be on the campus of Cal State Monterrey. This is the absolute best time to be there. The fog starts rolling in in June and stops around Sep/Oct.

Drive to Hearst Castle 134 miles south on 1.
Maybe stay in San Luis Obispo at the Madonna Inn, at least have lunch or dinner.
Visit the many Spanish missions in the area.
Laguna Seca Raceway borders Ft. Ord.
San Jose is 60 miles (Santana Row, Winchester House), Santa Cruz 40 (Falafel of Santa Cruz on hwy 1, The Beach Boardwalk), Big Trees Redwood Forest, San Francisco 120.
Eat squid and eggs for breakfast on Cannery Row.
Watch the Coast Guard rescue some morons out in small boat in bad weather.
See Grey Whales as close as 200 ft from shore.
Run into one of the many people that make Pebble Beach home.

There are different classifications of languages. The classifications depend on the difficulty of the languages. Arabic, Farci, Swahili, and Hindustani are some of the hardest class languages while French and Spanish are some of the easiest. Most times, the individuals that attend DLI usually learn at least two languages while there during the 53 weeks. Also, I would say for you to go to Monterey. You and your husband are newly weds and he is likely to deploy or go out to sea later in his career, so spend all of the time with him now that you can. Also, you have a 2 month old child.... give Daddy time to bond with the child. Not to mention, Monterey is beautiful and the Military will give you money for living there. The money that the military gives the Service Member for living in a certain area is called BAH. The amount of BAH that you will receive depends on where the famiily is located. The BAH for Monterey is one of the highest rates for all of the US.
Go with your husband after you complete your class.

As it's been said, it tends to be more than one language & they want to make sure they know it. Monterey is really nice; it's an Army language school if I remember correctly, but all branches are about up there. I think you might like it there too so I'd suggest going along as well with your daughter; plus when he's done there it's probably only a matter of time before he goes out to sea for a while. D:

Monterey is nice. There is Navy housing available. A lot of times they send people there to learn two languages, so its hard to say what those languages would be. The Navy should have told him.

When my friend went for one year, he was sent to learn French and Swahilli since he was an African Foreign Area Officer. His wife really enjoyed it out there.
