You could have been bitten...however...........
It could be something in the air, theres a lot of things flying around at the minute, a simple thing of one of those weird white fluffy flowerheads can start of a reaction, you could have more sensitive skin,. but that sounds like an allergic reaction to a plant...bug...tree etc. what was around you where you went outside? Has it happened before? Do you suffer from any skin disorder or eczma?
the swelling and redness MIGHT have been caused by you scratching it, not saying it deffo is, it just could be, as things do turn red when you scratch them :)
Just try putting cream on it and in future when you go out take a hayfever tablet/medicine dose and spray with insect repellent OR go back to your doctor, next time keep an eye on your nose to see if anything lands on it.
Good luck xx

Perhaps it is hayfever and you've inhaled some pollen which has caused this.
Other than that, it's impossible to say. Haven't you noticed what kind of things set it off? Food, pets etc.
As long as you're not having difficulty with breathing then you should be okay until the morning when you can get some medication - they sell antihistamines at the chemists if you can't get to your doctor's surgery right away.
Keep a diary of things that make you feel worse or itchy. Don't rely on taking antihistamines or you'll never find out what's causing this problem.
You can ask to see an allergy specialist who can do blood and skin prick tests to find out the allergens that affect you if you'd really like to know.

Often, as human beings we unintentionally touch our faces hundreds of times throughout the day without even knowing it. From your description, here's what sounds like happened: You went outside, and in the process you touched something. This object or place previously came into contact with something else before you touched it, and that "something else" could have been an animal or a plant. When you unconsciously touched your face, you had a reaction to the object that came into contact with another object.
I believe that the symptoms you describe are due to your body's release of histamine, which produces the itchy sensations and redness. Therefore, I strongly recommend taking two antihistamine tablets, such as regular strength benedryl, every two hours until the symptoms subside. Then, after the symptoms subside, only take one tablet every four to six hours thereafter. Follow the directions on the back of the package for additional indications of the over-the-counter medicine, and never take too many, especially at one time.

The redness and swelling could be caused by the scratching!
Ask your doctor to refer you to an allergist or immunologist. They can perform a simple skin test to determine exactly what causes allergic reactions in your body. Once you know what it is, you can learn the reduce or eliminate your exposure. If you only have problems at a certain of year, it could be pollen or mold. If it is year around, it could be dust mite, cockroach, or pet. Because allergies are caused by the body mis-identifying a protein, and because there are a bajillion proteins in the world, it is hard to win this guessing game.

could be some kind of pollen (conker trees seem a bit spiteful at the moment)- also, might be a mozzie attack - they're everywhere just now. Hope it feels better soon. You could try rubbing an ice cube over the itchy area - or cold water. It does help reduce the itch, if only for a time and would also help reduce swelling and redness. Take care

It's an inhaled allergy. Probably trees this time of year.
I would suggest homeopathics - Boiron makes a tree mix pellet that helps me and my family.
Also - Arsenicum Album 30c would help.
put the pellets under your tongue; keep away from mint, coffee, cell phones, anything pungent.
also - try using a neti pot to clean your sinuses - especially when you're having allergy flare ups.
Accupuncture and chiropractics can help too!

At this time of year it`s usually pollen from the harvesting (wheat) I find it worse if i go outside in the evening because when the temperature drops the pollen that has risen in the warmth of the day drops back down. A nasal spray as well as the tablets would help.

Are you sure you haven't been bitten by something when you were outside?
...as in an insect...not like a neighbour or something.
If the place where its red is fairly circular...hotter than normal skin and sometimes the skin feels slighter thinner where you've been bitten.
I should know..I'm strongly allergic to insect bites...I swell up like a football. It's really important you resist scratching it...it should go away by itself quite quickly if you do.
If not...you can go to the doctor...mine gives me anti-histamine tablets...histamine is the pus stuff that fills the bite up making it swell. My body produces far to much of it...so I have to take anti histamines to stop it happening.
If it is a bite of some kind...it doesn't sound that bad...stop itching it..it'll go away sooner than you think..is my advice.
