Some early religions believed your soul lingers to help your family, i.e. you become the "ancestor spirit".
Buddhists (some sects) believe you are returned to learn another lesson in yet another life, until you are enlightened enough to move on to Nirvanna, which is a place of unity with the One (God). In some cases, an enlightened one will return to help others. Those souls are possibly seen as Ghandi, Mother Theresa, MLK, etc.
Physics states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only change forms.

Most religions teach that when you die an immortal soul leaves the body to go to a heaven or to a fiery hell.Note these scriptures though:
Ecclesiastes 9:5,10
"For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten.... All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol (hell used here in other translations), the place to which you are going."
Jonah 2:2 says Jonah, while in the fish, was said to be in hell.
This isn't a fiery place of torment, but it would have become his grave if he had not been rescued.
Genesis 37:35 says Jacob wanted to go to hell after his God-fearing son was said to be dead. He wouldn't want to go to a fiery place of torment. He just wished he was dead because he was grieving so badly for his son.
Ezekiel 18:4 says "the soul that is sinning it itself will die."
These 4 scriptures, along with many more, show that when people die they can't feel anything.
They also show that the word hell means Mankind's grave.
The idea of a fiery place is not Christian.. Christendom adopted this teaching from pagan religions and philosophies.
The first century Christians followed the Holy Scriptures and knew the condition of the dead.
There is hope, though, for our dead loved ones and for us when we die.
Jesus called this the resurrection. -
John 5:28,29 and Acts 24:15
The word resurrection means "a standing up again". Jesus says there at that scripture:"Do not marvel at this: For the hour is coming..." This resurrection is a coming back to this earth.
There are many examples of resurrections in the Bible that happened, so we know it's possible.
By Jesus himself, while on earth, resurrected Lazarus, Jairus' daughter, Widow of Nain's son, Tabitha.
Paul resurrected Eutychus
Elijah resurrected a widow's son
Elisha resurrected a child.
And there is Jesus himself whom God resurrected!
Here are the scriptures that talk about these resurrections:
John chapter 11
Luke 7:11-17
Luke 8:40-56
Acts 7-12
1st Kings 17:17-24
2nd Kings 4:32-37
John 20:1,2,17
This resurrection will happen after Jesus cleanses the earth of all wickedness.- Revelation 19:11-16 and 20:12-15

I wish I knew - from my experience loved ones have gone "making the rounds" is what I'd call it - saying their goodbyes, I've seen two just after their death in my room and one other in a dream - well, a series of dreams - just about every belief has a different spin on it, but I'll tell you, every single time, they've all basically let me know they're OK and there's no more pain for them (one was in a bad accident and another had alzheimer's) and really, for me it's just like stepping into another way of "being" - existence on another level - but that's just IMHO - I don't think there's punnishment or kudos or the like, just peace and that's something I'm MORE than alright with - some Pagans call this The Summerlands or "Crossing the Veil", and I"m really alright with that - no-one has all the answers, much as some would love to believe they do, they really don't - we do like to question though - human nature and all.....and when we do it helps me at least to think there is something to look forward to that's nothing to fear.

Yes, some people see things before they die, and a lot of people know they're gonna die soon before they do, usually sick people though. I believe we go somewhere when we die, and soon after we are born into another life, probably of a whole other type of being and lifestyle. Why else would there be so many galaxies, stars, planets etc.? Think about it, you live, you learn, then die. Why would you live to learn, if you're born to die. Do you just lose all the knowledge you gained when you're dead? I doubt it.

reincarnation, various versions of heaven or hell or just hell/ hades. gohsts,
animism/ ancestor worship, believe ancestors wander about unseen like ghosts, they leave food for them and such, even special money for the dead. apparently they have some need to buy things.
the life stream- your energy is broken up and mixed in the energy with others in this flowing life stream, the energy then goes into new life around the globe in trees or other animals mixed up and spread out (FFVII).

I think its like 1977 at Studio 54 and we are dancing and drinking and having the times of our life. I've got a full head of hair and a my body is still rocking the house. Hey, there goes Liza Minelli and John Travolta. Wow, they are much smaller in person. anyway, my favorite Donna Summer song is about to start so I've gotta get ready to do the Hustle.

I believe in an after life of some sort depending on God's judgment. I am a Christian, so I believe that I will be in heaven in the presence of God.

I'm a witch, and I believe we go to the summerland and asses our lives, and then are reborn. The summerland is a resting place for souls between lives. There is much more to it, but that's the jist. To each his own!

The only theory of an "afterlife" that makes any kind of internal sense to me is that of reincarnation. Not to say that I "believe" in reincarnation.
