My cat is 13 yrs old. She has always had great health. Over the past few days she has been a little awnry. The past hour I noticed she has been whining. When I call her name she whines, moans, and then growls a little bit. This is very uncommon for her. I called her vet but he is off today. Please help. Could this be a result of my kids occasionally chasing her around? I am wondering if she is being moody because of them.

Also, I noticed as I touched her right side near her belly that she moaned ( so now I know it is not the kids). The vet can't see her until sunday. Have you had experiences with this? what could it be???

She's in pain. Make your kids leave her alone -- she doesn't need any more stress.
I'd advise you to have her seen by a vet before Sunday. Your vet must have someone who is taking care of his patients while he is off. Find out who and take her there. I don't think she can wait two days to be seen. She may have a serious internal problem such as a uterine infection (if she hasn't been spayed), a tumor, an injury, kidney disease, or quite a few other possibilities. She is not moaning and growling because she's mody.

We had one of ours start moaning, hissing and growling and she kept trying to lick her belly. ALSO on a late Saturday night. When she growled at my sig. other (her sweetie) we knew it was serious and took her in to the emergency vets even with the cost.
The exam didn't find anything but the x-ray did. Her colon and intestines were in a straight line from anus to up past her heart, she was constipated with 12" of intestine pulling into one long straight line. They were afraid it would burst and gave her an enema, which worked in about 20 minutes.
I had to make sure ALL of it came out, and it wa a horrible mess, but at least nothing burst inside and we didn't lose her.
I'm not saying yours has this, but check the litter box, if she hasn't pooped in a while, it may be a factor. But if one side hurts, she could have a broken hip, broken rib, cracked bone, anything. She's in obvious pain to be vocal about it. Most cats in pain are totally silent because they instinctively know that making noise draws predators.

It could be because of your kids, remember that at 13 years she is considered a "senior" cat, all she wants to do is relax but your children don't let her. Tell them that she is not a kitten and needs her space and that should make the moaning/whining stop. Also as soon as you can consult your vet and maybe schedule an appointment.
Best of luck!

Not knowing your cat, it could be a number of things. Something could be causing her discomfort, like constipation or possibly an absess forming somewhere. She even could be having urinary tract problems. Is she using the litter box? I would get an appointment with another vet in your clinic if there is one. She needs to be seen to determine exactly what is causing the problem. It could be something as simple as she is upset because the kids are chasing her, but I doubt that is it.

Take her to the vet.
Since the vet isn't available,go to the hospital/clinic. Don't allow her to suffer over the long holiday weekend.

If that is out of the ordinary for her, you should take her to the vet- since yours is off, I would take her to a different one you know about because the long weekend since they will be closed Monday also.
