Humans are three-part beings, in the same pattern as God.
Part one is Body. This is the part that dies off after a time, and returns to the dust from which it was made.
Part two is Spirit. This is the part that animates the body, and makes it go. It is the force of life that God breathed into Adam to bring him to life.
Part three is Soul. This is the part that is created when a Human Body is given Spirit. When these two merge a living soul is created.
Upon bodily death, the three are released. The body returns to the Earth. The Spirit returns to God. The Soul, however, remains to be accountable for the life it led on Earth. If found to be acceptable, the Soul is issued a new, Heavenly body, and is promoted on to what we know as Heaven. If the soul did not qualify for the heavenly reward, it is discarded. We know that as "hell".

In the Baha'i Faith, everything in this material world is an emanation of spirit. Thus, the trees, plants, animals, minerals, etc. have spirit or a minute spark of the Divine. However, the spirit of man is the rational soul, that is enabled in spirituality and rationalisation.
"The human spirit which distinguishes man from the animal is the rational soul, and these two names—the human spirit and the rational soul—designate one thing. This spirit, which in the terminology of the philosophers is the rational soul, embraces all beings, and as far as human ability permits discovers the realities of things and becomes cognizant of their peculiarities and effects, and of the qualities and properties of beings. But the human spirit, unless assisted by the spirit of faith, does not become acquainted with the divine secrets and the heavenly realities. It is like a mirror which, although clear, polished and brilliant, is still in need of light. Until a ray of the sun reflects upon it, it cannot discover the heavenly secrets."

Spirit is the you hold and unflyable, or should not be flyed from some body.
Soul is the one you release and give to someone else, and flyable.
You can give and receive a soul, but not a spirit: you hold a spirit forever, eternally.

IMO, a soul is a spirit when it is in a physical body, a spirit is a soul without a physical body.

My take on it is that the spirit is the essence of the soul that will stay behind as a ghost if there was unfinished business prior to death. I also think that it IS the part of our soul that takes care of earthly business and keeps us going through our lives.

The soul is what gives you life. When the body dies, it does also. The spirit is what is considered the ethereal body.
